Stonyhurst seeks to appoint exceptional House Parents' who will ensure a homely environment, in loco parentis for our pupils. Residing within the Boarding House, the House Parent provides pastoral care for pupils.
As a House Parent, you will play a central role in this busy boarding and day school. Primarily you will be responsible for creating a homely environment in which each boarding pupil feels cared for.

You will provide a cohesive structure in all aspects of day to day running of a boarding house, maintaining our high standard of care and ensuring the welfare, happiness, safety and health of all boarding pupils.


You will also make a significant contribution to the day to day running of the Playroom, ensure pupils within your care attend lessons and activities, contribute to and attend Playroom retreats, Masses and other aspects of the spiritual life of the College and actively promote the College's Mission and Identity as set out in the Stonyhurst mission statement.


This is a full time, term time only position within a busy boarding school and you will work six days per week.

This is a residential role which requires flexibility and adaptability.


In addition to the role, there is an expectation that staff will be involved in the wider life of the school, through co-curricular contributions and Parent events.


Key Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Be responsible for the pastoral care and wellbeing of pupils in their care. This will include ensuring high standards of discipline, tidiness and presentation;
  • Manage and deploy a team of Assistant House Parent and Boarding Assistants in the boarding house. Duty rotas should be constructed in conjunction with the Assistant Head for the year group to ensure adequate staffing of the Playroom is achieved;
  • Be responsible for all travel arrangements associated with students in their care. This includes liaising with the school travel coordinator and parents/guardians over transport arrangements, passports, BRP cards etc;
  • Be responsible for inducting any new students into the boarding areas and more generally work with the Assistant Head inducting new students into the Playroom community;
  • Manage and process all exeat requests for pupils in their care;
  • Have knowledge and understanding of National Minimum Standards for Boarding, ensuring they are delivered;
  • In conjunction with the Health Centre, oversee the medical needs of the pupils in their care;
  • Ensure all boarders have sufficient rest, and that bedtime routines appropriate to the age group are established and maintained;
  • In conjunction with the Assistant Head, coordinate and run a series of evening and weekend leisure activities for pupils in their care and contribute in such ways as deemed appropriate to cocurricular activities or games;
  • Oversee the morning registration of day pupils in the Playroom;
  • Oversee fire procedures for the pupils in your Playroom;

Assistant House Parent

The Assistant House Parent role is primarily to support the work of the House Parent in taking responsibility for the overall care and welfare of all the pupils in the boarding house.


Their job is to assist in maintaining our high standard of care and ensuring the welfare, happiness, safety and health of all boarding pupils.

The Assistant House Parent must have the ability to help create a stable working and pastoral environment.

A significant timetabled contribution (including at weekends) to other areas of College life is essential e.g. Games coaching and teams management, supporting The Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme, College Cadet Force, Outdoor Pursuits, Co-curricular Arts. Specific training opportunities shall be provided for certain areas of responsibility and activity.


The Assistant House Parent will be line managed by the House Parent, who shall also conduct the Assistant House Parent's annual appraisal and performance management review.

Additionally, there is a close working relationship with the Assistant Heads who take overall day to day pastoral and academic responsibility for the pupils.


The post holder will contribute to and attend Playroom retreats, Masses and other aspects of the spiritual life of the College.

  • Support the House Parent in coordinating and staffing leisure activities for pupils, as well as contributing in such ways as deemed appropriate to run cocurricular activities or games.
  • Support the House Parent in ensuring National Minimum Standards for Boarding are met.
