Job Description:
A subsidiary entity of a larger European banking group is looking for a legal counsel with transaction and contract management experience (especially leasing) to join their Richmond-based team
The Organisation
The organisation is owned by an international banking group headquartered in Europe. Its UK office is based in Richmond-Upon-Thames. The organisation provides vendor and equipment finance in the Hi-tech, Transport, Construction, Industrial, Medical, PublicSector, and Agriculture markets.
This role will involve working cohesively as part of a small team, assisting the Head of Legal to establish the Legal Department.
Duties of the In-House Lawyer include responsibility for legal risk management; lead role in transaction and contract management;dispute resolution; delivering legal awareness training; robust legal file governance; providing general legal and regulatory advice to Senior Management and other staff; and escalation of issues to Head of Legal and Senior Management.
The Responsibilities:
- Reviewing, drafting, and negotiating documentation for the organisation and its business and management.
- Proactively handling incoming queries from the business on legal and contract issues and disputes.
- Transaction and deal support in conjunction with Risk/Credit and other business departments.
- Instructing and supervising external counsel.
- Acting as the first point of contact on externally instructed files, taking account of budget requirements and Legal panel guidelines.
- Advising senior management in relation to regulatory issues, queries, and investigations.
- Managing litigation/disputes/complaints against the organisation.
- Supporting Head of Legal Group reporting obligations and committees including legal risk reporting.
- Lead role in European transactions and programmes for implementation in the U.K.
- Oversight and training of Paralegal.
- Deputising for Head of Legal as required.
The Competencies:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills to give advice and influence internal and external customers.
- Capable of analysing problems rigorously and from all angles, showing sound practical judgment as well as academic ability.
- Proven track record of drafting and negotiating commercial agreements.
- Ability to provide sound practical commercial advice, underpinned by the law but avoiding complex legal jargon.
- Ability to work under pressure, independently, and as part of a team to enable the business to achieve targets.
- Reliable and proactive.
The Requirements:
- Qualified solicitor or barrister in England with a minimum of 5 years PQE (current Solicitor's practicing certificate or equivalent)
- Experience and knowledge of asset leasing or excellent knowledge of commercial and contract law with a law firm or inhouse.
- CCA and FSMA experience is desirable, but not essential.
