Job Purpose

To manage and provide guidance to all matters related to Environment, Health and Safety across the business.

The Environmental aspect of the role is heavily focused on supporting and managing the waste management aspects of the business, which includes (but is not limited to) the hazardous treatment and transfer facilities in the business, as well as the waste collection fleet of vehicles and all associated environmental permitting and licencing matters.

The Health and Safety aspect of the role is primarily focused on physical health and safety matters, with the role ensuring (as far as reasonably practicable) that the assets are operated in a safe and legally compliant manner.

The role will also provide support to the QHS Co-ordinator in relation to occupational health and safety matters.


The EHS Manager role is considered to be the key contact point with all regulators, such as the Environment Agency, Natural Resource Wales, the Health & Safety Executive and any other legal government bodies of authority.

Site auditing and reporting will also be a key part of the role to ensure continuous improvement and compliance for the department, and business as a whole.

Main tasks & responsibilities


The EHS Manager is to work closely with the QHS Co-ordinator and Group Technical Director to deliver all of the objectives and targets expected from the HSEQ Department, in supporting the wider business.

To manage and ensure legal compliance across all areas of the business
Manage all interactions with environmental health and safety regulators such as the Environment Agency, Natural Resources Wales, Health and Safety Executive and other regulators as applicable (e.g. SEPA, NIEA, DEFRA, etc), including;

  • Managing environmental compliance, such as Site Permits, Waste Carriers Licences, etc
Managing environmental reporting requirements such as Quarterly Returns, Annual Reports, PIRs, etc
Managing other legal reporting such as RIDDORs, etc
Provide Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor (DGSA) coverage, or where applicable appoint and manage and appropriate third party to provide DGSA coverage to the business
To co-ordinate and manage the ongoing group wide accreditations such ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, Safe Contractor, etc, including being the document owner of key overarching IMS document system
To be one of the key HSEQ Department points of contact to support and assist colleagues with the development, maintenance and archiving of safety assessments, including Risk Assessments, Fire Risk Assessments, COSHH Assessments, RAMS, etc
To manage and co-ordinate adequate Technical Competent Manager (TCM) coverage on all waste transfer sites, in conjunction with the Operations Team
To act as the company's Legionella Duty Holder and manage associated activities with the relevant Legionella Appointed Persons in the business
To either act as (or appoint) an appropriate Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA) and to co-ordinate all Radiation Protection Supervisors (RPS) in the business

To manage all HSEQ related documentation on the internal documentation library, ensuring up to date, accurate and appropriately branded copies are stored and available to the business for use.

To review all existing documentation to ensure accurate, in date and branded copies are stores, replacing, amending where appropriate.
Plan, manage and support the delivery of the internal audit programme
To manage and co-ordinate accident and incident investigations within the business, with the assistance of other HSEQ Department and other business unit colleagues
To assist the QHS Co-ordinator in providing accurate and timely responses to all HSEQ related tender queries from across the business
To be aware of Slicker values and deliver these on a day to day basis within the role.
Other ad hoc requirements associated with the role to ensure that overall HSEQ objectives are delivered.

Skills and key requirements

Essential skills and experience

A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in the waste industry
Solid managerial experience, include working with multiple UK wide sites and stakeholders
Competent user of Microsoft packages, to include experience of using internal document libraries / portals
Full UK driving licence and ability/willingness to travel to other sites as part of the role as required
Ability to work independently, using own initiative and proven experience of being proactive and solutions focused
External Auditor (desirable but not essential) and Internal Auditor training through an external body

Education / Qualifications

NEBOSH Environmental Management Certificate or higher
IOSH Managing Safely or NEBOSH General Health and Safety Certificate
WAMITAB Treatment and Transfer of Hazardous Waste
DGSA qualification - desirable but not essential
A qualification or degree in environmental sciences / chemistry - desirable but not essential
