Health and Safety Adviser

Duties & responsibilities:


To assist the Lead Health and Safety Business Partner and the Head of Health and Safety in supporting the delivery of the NHS Lothian Health and Safety Management System to ensure compliance with health and safety legislation; Key responsibilities include, for example, the ability to produce written reports in a clear and concise manner and to write and review policies and procedures.


To work with the operational Heads of Service and their management teams as directed by the Lead Health and Safety Business Partner, in the management and control of health and safety risks.


Key requirements:

A high level of, qualification, knowledge and experience is required. The following are essential.

  • Holder of specialist health and safety qualification such as Postgraduate Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety or National Examination Board of Occupational Health and Safety Diploma (NEBOSH) or SVQ Level 5 in Occupational Safety and Health
  • Chartered Member of Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (CMIOSH) or clear evidence of working towards CMIOSH.
  • Significant experience working within a large complex multisite organisation.
  • Excellent presentation skills.
  • A high level of influencing and assertiveness skills.
  • Excellent verbal (spoken and written) skills
  • Excellent planning and organisational skills.
The following would be desirable, but none are individually essential:

  • BOHS Certificate in occupational Hygiene.
  • Effective soft skills such as listening and conflict management.
  • Effective at team working both within the department and beyond.
Although not essential, experience within a Mental Health environment would be an advantage.
