Description
The post holder will deliver patient care on a daily basis. They should be expert in all areas of general paediatric nursing care from patient's admission to discharge.

They are expected to carry out all relevant forms of care, and is designated to take charge of the ward on a regular basis, in the absence of the person who has continuing responsibility.


As nurse in charge they have overall responsibility for day-to-day management of their clinical area and for ensuring all care is delivered according to Trust policies and procedures maintaining associated records.

They will manage, support and lead a team of paediatric nurses in the delivery of evidence-based family-centred care, which is of a high standard.

They will assist the senior sister in the management of staff including appraisal, rotas and the supervision of learners. They will provide advice and support to parents/carers, relatives and members of the multi-disciplinary team.


Utilising clinical audit, research, supervision of practice and teaching, they will monitor and improve standards of care by efficient and effective use of resources and liaise with the senior sister at all times.

The will provide leadership on the Trusts values and behaviours.

They are expected to supervise and to be able to teach all grades of staff, including basic and/or post-basic students.


The post holder is responsible for the assessment, development, implementation and evaluation of patient's care, without supervision and the teaching of other medical, nursing and non-nursing staff.

The post holder is designated to take charge and ensure the day to day smooth running of the ward on a regular basis, in the absence of the person who has continuing responsibility.

If you are already a paediatric registered band 6 sister or charge nurse, or see yourself developing into this role, come and continue your development within our dedicated paediatric nursing team on Hascombe Ward.


Hascombe Ward is a 23 bed general paediatric ward and Paediatric Assessment Unit at the Royal Surrey Hospital in Guildford.

We provide care to children of all ages and their families with a wide variety of medical and surgical needs (ENT, Maxillo-facial, Ophthalmology, General surgery, and Orthopaedics).

We are a designated level 2 Paediatric Oncology Shared Care Unit (POSCU) providing shared care with the Royal Marsden. We work closely with the paediatric ED department, SCBU and children's out-patient department.
