    _Principal Advisor__ role within the SAU._

The Subsidy Advice Unit

  • The Subsidy Advice Unit forms part of the new domestic regime for subsidy control and commenced operations in January 2023. The functions of the SAU are set out in the Subsidy Control Act. The SAU will provide expert and impartial advice to public authorities on referral of complex and highvalue subsidies and will monitor and report on the effective operation of the UK subsidy control regime._

The role


Supporting the senior leadership in capacity building, the Principal Advisor will work across policy related projects, using well-reasoned evidence-based analysis to support the delivery of high quality, robust and impartial advice and reports published by the SAU.

This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the establishment of a new domestic subsidy regime for the UK and the work of the SAU is likely to attract a high level of interest and scrutiny.

This role is available in the Cardiff, Belfast, Edinburgh, London, Manchester offices.

Person specification:


Your detailed responsibilities:

Delivering SAU projects

  • Lead individual workstreams within SAU projects so that they are delivered in an effective and timely way (including to statutory deadlines) and to budget;
  • Ensure that SAU projects and outputs (reports, advice to public authorities) are based on clear, accurate, wellreasoned and evidencebased analysis, and that they comply with applicable procedures;
  • Identify, assess and manage potential areas of risk, including legal risk;
  • Develop expertise and provide advice, at pace, on complex and technical matters relating to SAU projects;
  • Communicate clearly, both orally and in writing, ensuring documents are drafted to a high standard.
  • Take account of the wider policy and market context in taking forward SAU projects, supporting the relevant Senior Leadership Team to set direction and strategy.

Leadership within the SAU

  • Contribute to the SAU's development as a new unit within the CMA, ensuring arrangements are in place and continue to be improved for effective and efficient project delivery, ensuring a focus on continuous improvement within projects and across the organisation, and sharing knowhow.

Managing staff and building capability

  • Effectively manage and develop multidisciplinary teams, contributing to wider leadership and capacity building in the SAU, including building staff capability through fostering talent, coaching, learning and development, mentoring and effective performance management.

Effective communication and close partnership working

  • Develop and maintain fair, open, professional and proactive communication and engagement with public authorities and other stakeholders throughout the UK.
