Team Structure:


Our restructuring and insolvency (R&I) practice is a multi-jurisdiction departmental group of lawyers, based in London, Hong Kong and Singapore.


We are looking for a mid to senior level lawyer (4 to 8 years PQE) to assist principally with the contentious work of the team albeit they may be requested to take part in all and any aspects of the work covered by the team, which includes non-contentious and advisory matters.

The team is particularly well known for high value/high profile bankruptcies, enforcement receiverships and fraud/asset recovery work. We work closely with the firm's Tier 1 ranked Civil Fraud and Asset Recovery team.

We are ranked Tier 1 for Personal Insolvency in Chambers and Partners; and Tier 5 for Corporate Restructuring and Insolvency in the Legal 500.

Julian Cahn is individually ranked for Personal Insolvency by Chambers & Partners; and Ian Benjamin is considered by Legal 500 to be a Next Generation Partner.


The team's contentious work encompasses use of the full range of Insolvency Act powers and causes of action in both corporate and personal insolvency, together with cross border work, civil enforcement measures such as freezing orders and enforcement receiverships, plus more general commercial litigation arising in an insolvency context.


Recent examples of contentious work include the following:

  • We have acted for both the Administrators of Bolton Wanders Football Club and the court appointed receivers of Blackpool Football Club;
  • Acting for the liquidators of Rangers Football Club;
  • Acting for the administrators and then liquidators of the collapsed public relations group Bell Pottinger;
  • Acting for Court appointed enforcement receivers involved in litigation in Turks & Caicos, England, and Guernsey;
  • Acting for the Trustees in Bankruptcy of the tennis champion Boris Becker;
  • Acting for the Trustees in Bankruptcy of the oligarch Georgy Trefilov; and
  • Acting for the Trustees in Bankruptcy of the Japanese-Taiwanese shipping magnate Hsin Chi Su (also known as Nobu Su)
  • Acting for foreign officeholders to obtain recognition of foreign proceedings in England & Wales in furtherance of crossborder asset recovery strategies
  • Acting to enforce a very large arbitral award against a foreign country by enforcing against its assets in England
  • Acting for the receivers of Gerald Martin Smith, twice convicted fraudster, in a multireported action to recover assets towards an outstanding Confiscation Order in excess of £75m

Main Responsibilities:

  • Clear, concise and unambiguous preparation and drafting of documentation
  • Liaison with clients under appropriate supervision of a partner
  • Managing more junior associates, trainees and paralegals
  • Developing own informal internal and external network of contacts and playing a significant role in business development for the team
  • Building excellent working relationships with clients and peers within the firm
  • Attending and helping to arrange business development and profile raising events (client seminars, graduate recruitment activities)
  • Conducting legal research using internal and external knowledge management resources

Attributes/Skills Required:

  • Qualified lawyer with relevant insolvency law experience gained in private practice.
  • Demonstrates and applies a deep understanding of the law and significant expertise in one or more areas within own practice group, building a reputation and skills for restructuring and insolvency
  • Plans and allocates work in accordance with brief/scope agreed with clients; instructs and manages external parties and counsel; supervises and oversees/runs the management of concurrent matters
  • Monitors and manages time, fee levels and personal financial performance to manage matters profitably whilst preserving value for clients; Takes responsibility for protecting longterm relationships valuable to own group and the firm; regularly communicates, 'builds bridges' and keeps all important parties on side
  • Displays accuracy and attention to detail
  • Excellent verbal and numerical communication skills
  • Organised and able to work to strict deadlines with the ability to prioritise realistically
  • Resilient with the ability to handle setbacks and pressure
  • A selfstarter, ambitious, keen to work in a developing department
