Why this job matters
An exciting opportunity exists to join the synchronization team which is part of specialist platforms.

This is to manage existing timing capabilities used in BT's fixed and mobile networks and work on cutting edge technology that will form the foundation of BT's timing infrastructure for many years to come.


The purpose of this role is to:

  • Manage the whole life technology cycle of the inlife platforms that underpin many billions of pounds of service platform revenue. This includes delivery, security, and increasingly important TSA aspects.
  • Develop roadmaps, manage budgets, implementing platform and technology improvements and carry out robust testing and evaluation.
  • Use their knowledge of the future timing technology, to further useful research for the benefit of the platform and leverage these developments when appropriate into BT's strategic platforms.
  • Simplify the timing estate, whilst evaluating and implementing advanced future timing capabilities. These new capabilities may be complex in themselves, so they need to be developed and implemented in a way to consume simply at scale.

This role follows hybrid working in BT's Ipswich site

What you'll be doing

  • Accountable in a small team for Platform management, Design and Planning of BT Synchronsation Platforms specifically the UK Core, Core Time Base (phase, frequency and time), optical distribution and the Global timing platform. Including aspects of the various UK/Global service platforms, TPEN Sync, MPLS, Voice Media Gateways, etc.
  • Day to day management of key parts of a complex platform (parts are undergoing change due to compaction and parts are growing with new capabilities and technology)
  • Inlife customer experience and health of the platform, including platform security, creation of specific platform roadmaps and associated budgets, service and platform related deliverables and overall platform sustainability, commissioning, configuration, testing and any other works on or affecting the platform and its services.
  • Drives improvements via platform upgrades to reduce the complexity of infrastructure, whilst ensuring service and demand requirements are proactively met using simplified solutions.
  • Supports CAS(T) government accredited services and critical national infrastructure & major CFU customers.

  • The Skills You'll Need to Succeed
  • A solid understanding of both timing platforms and the services / systems which interact with it as consumers or providers. Knowledge of the appropriate best practice for different aspects of the platform and introduction process.
  • Knowledge of synchronisation technology and given the rapid pace of change in timing technology ideally expertise of new technology in early research stages.
  • Understanding of regulatory, legislative or security domains in which they operate.
  • Business expertise in managing platforms. This includes support for products and interfaces with other BT platforms, operations and customer channels, ideally using agile methodology where appropriate. JIRA skills would also be helpful.
  • Key interface with strategic vendors and security. Driving capacity management for optimisation and growth.
  • Develop and deliver business cases for platform upgrades, growth and maintenance with vendors and finance teams. Manages and contributes to the teams CAPEX build for the year.
  • Very strong communication skills engages with and presents to colleagues, senior managers and directors, across platform, design and strategic vendors with a track record of presentation, ideally including external forums.
  • Matrixmanagement of teams and resources to ensure alignment to roadmaps, technical strategy, technology introduction and delivery.
  • Manages major escalations and ensures recovery actions are implemented.

  • Member of a professional body e.g. Institution of Engineering and Technology
  • Professional qualifications this can include track record of recognized research / delivery in an associated area.
