An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Matron for Maternity Workforce within maternity services to ensure a midwifery workforce that meets the needs of now and the future and will focus on recruitment, retention and temporary staffing working closely with key stakeholders and colleagues.

The matron will develop a workforce team which will include providing direct line management responsibilities for the retention midwives, practice development midwives and Professional Midwifery Advocate Lead.


The Matron for Maternity Workforce will be part of the senior leadership team within the Women & Children's Service at GEH.


The Matron will provide operational leadership to the midwifery staff, leading by example in the drive for the highest possible standards making a positive impact on care and will ensure the delivery of key quality standards and performance indicators are met.

The role of the matron will be an integral member of the directorate management team, ensuring delivery of performance targets and ensuring compliance with national guidance.


The Matron's role is vital to supporting the Head of Midwifery and Neonatal Services in leading quality improvement and assurance processes which underpin the provision of safe and effective care.

The matron will provide a positive patient experience by providing strong visible clinical leadership and being easily identifiable to patients, relatives and carers.


The Matron is responsible for leading the midwifery workforce for the service to ensure safe practice and the efficient and effective day to day running of the service.


The Matron will liaise with the Head of Midwifery and Neonatal Services to provide strategic direction to develop the service and implement decisions for change.

The post holder will support the Head of Midwifery and Neonatal Services to ensure the operational delivery of both the Directorate's core business and agreed strategic objectives through:

  • The provision of professional management support, demonstrating a high level of organisational ability and leadership to ensure that processes are agreed and implemented to effectively and efficiently deliver and achieve operational and quality requirements.
  • The provision of managerial focus in the development and provision of a comprehensive, high quality, patient centred service within the available resources, including line management of the band 7 midwives within the departments.
  • Responsible for the timely and efficient management of governance processes e.g. complaints and investigations.
  • Ensure that the education, training, and professional development needs of the midwifery and support worker workforce are identified, and appropriate plans are in place to ensure ongoing compliance with mandatory training.
  • To lead on the recruitment, selection and retention of staff and develop recruitment and retention materials for midwives and support staff.
  • Provide reports about the midwifery workforce recruitment position working closely with recruitment and workforce colleagues to provide robust, timely information to meet the needs of all stakeholders.
  • Provide workforce data as requested and interpret workforce reports.
  • Work with key stakeholders to look at shift patterns, flexible working and other innovative ideas to increase attraction of staff and improve retention and evaluate outcomes and staff experience.
