Job summary:

The Export and Investment Policy Unit is a key Department of Business and Trade (DBT) strategy team and works across the Department, Government and industry to develop policies to drive the UK's export and investment performance and enhance the UK's international competitiveness and prosperity.

We work closely with Ministers and DBT's Directors-General, as well other Government departments and operational teams in the UK and overseas.

We develop policy responses to trade and investment issues to remove barriers to exporting and investment, and feed those perspectives into other areas of the Department's work, for example on regulation.

Our work is dynamic and exciting, and we aim to improve the development of policies with better evidence, a better understanding of the political context, and through better planning.

This is a high-profile role leading on investment policy and strategy which involves close working with teams and senior leaders within DG Strategy and Investment, Ministers, business and other strategy teams within DBT and Government to ensure DBT's investment policy, strategy and leadership has the greatest impact.

There is strong demand for our work from DBT Ministers, senior officials, No.10 and Cabinet Office.

This is a great time to join as we are looking for a brilliant Grade 6 to build on our work to improve the UK's international competitiveness and address the main barriers to investment, as well as the opportunities presented by the creation of DBT to play a more prominent role as the voice of business across Whitehall.

The creation of DBT also creates the opportunity for the Department, and this individual, to play a prominent role in the pro-growth agenda of the Government.

The Grade 6 will be part of the Senior Management Team alongside the Deputy Director and the Head of Export Policy and Strategy.

Job description:

  • Provide leadership for the team's work on investment policy.
  • Develop and empower a high performing team, establishing a positive and collaborative working environment that encourages precise thinking and innovative solutions.
  • Provide leadership as the team adapts to the creation of the new department and the resulting policy opportunities.
  • Ensure investment considerations are factored into wider Departmental policy making, for example in the regulatory space and with bodies such as the British Business Bank.
  • Deliver essential project work, while responding to important shortterm demands.
  • Ensure DBT has strong strategic relationships with key partners across Government.
  • Ensure the team's work is consistent with the Department's Investment Strategy.
  • Respond to Secretary of State, Ministerial and DG priorities; and contribute to the wider work of the directorate and the Department, including at a corporate level.

Hybrid Working
Please be aware that this role can only be worked from within the UK and not overseas.

Informal hybrid working arrangements will be available as agreed with the vacancy manager and in line with the requirements of the role.

Most DBT employees will be working a hybrid pattern, spending 2-3 days a week (pro rata) in an office, on average.

If your office location is London, you will be eligible to receive London weighting.
