  • MRC-MRC The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine is a worldleading centre for research and postgraduate education in public and global health. Our mission is to improve health and health equity in the UK and worldwide; working in partnership to achieve excellence in public and global health research, education and translation of knowledge into policy and practice.

The Medical Research Council Unit The Gambia at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (MRCG at LSHTM) is one of the largest scientific research centres in sub-Saharan Africa, with an international reputation for ground-breaking research into some of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the tropics.

Our overall mission is to improve the health of people in low-income settings by aiming for excellence in research, healthcare and training.

Our research program spans basic science, clinical studies, epidemiological studies, intervention trials, and translational research including social research. The field and laboratory-based work draws on excellent research and clinical facilities and attracts international funding.

The Nutrition & Planetary Health Theme within MRCG at LSHTM aims to understand the pathophysiology of diet-disease interactions in order to accelerate the development of more effective next-generation community and clinical interventions.

The theme has a sub-group on Nutritional Genetics and Epigenetics that has made ground-breaking discoveries on how maternal pre-conceptional nutrition modifies the methylome of the very early embryo with likely lifelong programming of health-related phenotypes.

We are seeking to appoint, at Associate Professor level, a scientist with a PhD in a relevant discipline and advanced skills in bioinformatics and computational biology, as well as strong interests in hands-on research and data collection in The Gambia.

They will have expert knowledge of diverse epigenetic/genetic and other 'omics data and related acquisition methods, as well as experience of using bioinformatic tools to analyse such data.

The post-holder will inherit parts of a strong existing portfolio of studies and grants, which offer the opportunity to generate numerous strong outputs from the start of the appointment.

The post holder may also be required to make a contribution to teaching and research degree student supervision appropriate to their qualifications and experience.

Further particulars are available in the job description.

The post is full-time 35 hours per week, 1 FTE and fixed term until 31 March 2027. The post is funded by the MRCG and is available immediately. The post will be based in London with frequent travel to The Gambia.

Please note that if you are shortlisted and are unable to attend on the interview date it may not be possible to offer you an alternative date.
