Description

We are looking for a hydrogeologist to join a small friendly team of experts focused on the management and protection of groundwater across Hertfordshire and North London.

  • Hydrogeology is critical to supporting operational decisions, our environmental regulation and to further our understanding of the pressures placed on our water resources because of climate change. Groundwater of the chalk aquifer typical in this area plays a central role in drinking water supply as well as sustaining flow and supporting ecosystems dependent on the rare chalk streams.
  • In this role you will provide technical advice on hydrogeological and water resource activities, working in collaboration with colleagues in hydrology, water resources planning, monitoring, hydroecology, and contaminated land.
The role will help to ensure that future water demands are met whilst protecting groundwater and rivers and will include:

  • Working with licence holders, particularly water companies, to ensure licences are sustainable from our Chalk, Thames Gravel and Lower Greensand aquifers;
  • Updating resource strategy and identify water resource initiatives across Hertfordshire and North London, using our state of the art groundwater models;
  • Deliver our Water Framework Directive measures and Restoring Sustainable abstraction investigations.
The team

  • The post is part of the Groundwater and Hydrology team in the Hertfordshire and North London Area. We are responsible for providing technical and scientific expertise to internal teams, and to a wide range of external stakeholders, all to protect the quantity of groundwater.
  • We are based in the Area office in Welwyn Garden City, with some remote working, visits to other offices and occasional site work.
Experience/skills required

  • We are seeking an individual with a strong scientific background in hydrogeology. You will be qualified to MSc level or similar and have relevant experience in water resources. Ideally you will have groundwater model user skills.
  • You are enthusiastic to protect and promote groundwater. You will identify issues and solutions for a wide range of groundwater related activities. You will be able to communicate and present convincing verbal and written arguments to different audiences, both internally and externally.
  • We would like you to join us if you are confident in making reasoned, technically challenging decisions that enable us manage water resources sustainably into the future.
Contact and additional information

  • We don't just talk about diversity; we seek, embrace and live it, for the benefit of our staff, communities and our environment.
  • We support flexible working hours and practices to help you strike a good balance between your work/personal life, supporting you to keep developing skills and professional knowledge throughout your career.
  • The role is based in our Welwyn Garden City offices. Office attendance, occasional external meetings, training and site visits will be required on a business need basis.
  • The Environment Agency has an important incident management role, you will be encouraged to play your part in a way that fits around your work/life balance.
  • Interviews will be via MS Teams.
