Reporting to the Director of Research, the postholder will be the senior operational lead for the Division of Clinical Research (CRD) at Alder Hey.

Working with the Director of Research and the Head of Nursing & Clinical Governance, you will form the senior leadership team of the CRD.


This role will have primary accountability for the delivery of performance standards relating to study volume and participation, productivity, people and finance.

You will be the senior manager to whom all non-clinical staff in the Division will report to. You will directly line manage the General Manager and Head of Nursing.


The successful applicant will lead the management team and support the Director of Research in directing a core team of more than 50 delivery and governance staff and work closely with the Trust's approximately 100 Principal Investigators to provide our region's children and young people with access to a sustainable portfolio of cutting-edge research.

They will ensure an inclusive, 'hospital without walls' culture which nurtures the current and next generations of researchers from all our health and care professions to work with lay representatives to develop and deliver ground-breaking research which provides solutions to the every-day, real-world problems of children and young people.


Operationally, you will focus on ensuring there are processes, resources and a culture that supports researchers to advance clinical and translational research - increasing the number of studies hosted and led by Alder Hey and the volume and value of our commercial research programme.

The postholder will need to be an effective at fostering strong partnership with individuals and organisations.


In collaboration with the Director of Research, the post-holder will have responsibility for strategic development and outstanding performance of the Trust's Division of Clinical Research.

The Division is an established UK leader in paediatric research which facilitates the delivery of a current portfolio of more than 170 studies.

Based in our purpose-built Institute in the Park and including one of only two NIHR-funded Clinical Research Facilities exclusively for children and young people, the Division has recruited more than 47,000 children and young people to high-quality studies in the last 5 years.

The Director will lead further growth and balance of the portfolio by leading development and delivery of a refreshed Research Strategy, which emphasises multi-sector, national and international partnerships to firmly establish Alder Hey as a global leader in paediatric research.

Leadership

  • Demonstrate strong leadership to provide vision, direction and continuous improvement in the delivery of outstanding care.
  • Support the Director of Research in the development of a culture where safe and highquality patientcentered research is consistently delivered, evidenced, monitored, evaluated and improved up
  • Support teams to have the time, resources and mechanisms to deliver daily continuous improvement through the Brilliant Basics Programme.
  • Develop and nurture teams to provide a high standard of professional management support to researchers.
  • Work with the Director of Research to attract and retain talent within the division.
Strategic delivery and service improvement

  • To develop, progress, deliver and monitor the research strategy of the Trust.
  • Ensure the Division has in place a strategic and operational plan aligned with the Trust's vision and strategic aims.
  • Provide regular reporting against delivery of the strategy and operational plan.
  • Involve staff, set direction, allocate resources and establish programmes that support delivery of the strategy and operational plan.
  • Prepare and submit business cases and grant submissions.

People and culture

  • Be a positive influence in the creation of favourable conditions that supports clinicians and other staff groups to be research active.
  • Ensure there are effective team meetings and open staff forums to aid the dissemination and receipt of key information.
  • Ensure there is a leadership style, backed up with processes, that enable colleagues in the CRD to be informed of key messages and news, and have the opportunity to provide feedback on plans and be involved in key improvement work.
  • Ensure staff within the Division receive an annual personal development review.
  • Ensures effective communications and engagement with other clinical divisions and departments to advance research.
