We are offering an opportunity to join the team at Walberton Nursery, a well-established wholesale nursery, part of Tristram Plants and the Farplants Group.

Walberton Nursery produces more than 1 million plants for the garden centre market each year.

Walberton Nursery are seeking a Full Time Assistant Despatch Supervisor to join the team.


Outline of Job


The specific focus of the Assistant Despatch Supervisor is to effectively organise and supervise despatch teams and operations on the main site.

The primary aim is to efficiently prepare orders of the correct quality and within the correct timescale, whilst overseeing the smooth running of the Despatch department and deputising for the Despatch Supervisor, as necessary.


Specific Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Coordinating and supervising teams lifting product
  • Being involved with stock control crop walks, deciding on suitability of crops for sale, agreeing specifications with Despatch Supervisor and Farplants
  • Ensuring specifications are clearly communicated with staff and upheld
  • Maintaining regular communication with Farplants Finishing Centre with regards to transport and quality issues
  • Maintaining excellent communication with the Despatch Supervisor, meeting at least once a weekly to plan and review
  • Ensuring quality is maintained to defined standards, targeting to reduce the quantity of returned product
  • Ensuring all final quality and quantity checks are carried out and recorded
  • Monitoring supply and use of trolleys and Despatch related consumable materials
  • Ensuring monthly trolley stock checks are undertaken and resolving discrepancies
  • Planning work and trolley requirements for offsites using the IT link with Farplants Sales
  • Supporting the label management process, being able to place orders and book in deliveries
  • Monitoring, maintaining, and seeking to improve Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) e.g. lifting and processing rates
  • Completing Despatch paperwork as required
  • Recording Labour Hours daily using online time recording system within required timescales

Health & Safety

  • Ensuring you and your team are working safely and complying with relevant legislation and established Nursery procedures
  • Communicating to your team any Risk Assessments and Best Practice Workshops pertinent to their job, and ensuring they are understood and adhered to
  • Actively contributing toward the safe and efficient running of the Nursery by participating in Risk Assessment reviews and Best Practice Workshops through the year

Full time, permanent position, with minimum working hours as follows:

November to February 32.

5 hours per week:


  • Monday to Friday 08:30 15:45

March to July 44 hours per week:

  • Monday to Wednesday 07:30
  • 17:15
  • Thursday 07:30 13:00
  • Friday 07:30 16:15
  • Saturday 08:00 12:00

August to October 39 hours per week:

  • Monday to Thursday 08:00
  • 16:45
  • Friday 08:00 15:45
**Salary up to £27,000 per year depending on skills and experience; hours annual leave per year pro rata inc. Bank Holidays.
