Consultant in Breast Radiology with Additional PA for Director of Breast Screening Role


The Breast Screening service started in Canterbury in 1989 a year after the introduction of the National NHS Breast Screening programme in the UK.

We celebrated 30 years of outstanding service in 2019, just prior to the onset of the pandemic.

The team have provided almost continuous face to face service for our patients throughout the pandemic ensuring ongoing diagnostics and treatment.

We have full time PA's available for the above Consultant posts, but would require at least 0.6 WTE within Breast Radiology.


In addition the Director of Breast Screening (1 additional PA) is responsible for leadership, management, performance, quality, governance and overall accountability for the safe and effective provision of the local breast screening service.

The breast imaging and diagnostic service has a very high standard of care, provided by 5 Radiology Consultants, 1 Consultant radiographer, 1 Associate specialist and 3 Advanced practitioners with 1 further in training.

East Kent is looking to appoint new consultants across its major sites at Kent and Canterbury Hospital, Canterbury, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital, Margate and William Harvey Hospital, Ashford.

With Trust Board support for an optimisation and improvement programme to be delivered over the next two years, based on clinician engagement and clinical leadership.

Director of Breast Screening - 1 Additional PA


The Director of Breast Screening is responsible for leadership, management, performance, quality, governance and overall accountability for the safe and effective provision of the local breast screening service.


The leadership role is about establishing a culture where people and teams are motivated to be constructively self-critical in the pursuit of improved standards of service and outcomes for patients.

Effective communication is crucial to ensure the service reaches its goals and to foster good working relationships between the director, the senior leadership team and across the service.

The director retains accountability for the leadership of the service.

  • The Breast Imaging Radiology team in East Kent has a longstanding reputation for excellence in breast screening and symptomatic breast services.

Our clinical targets and statistics and also non clinical process statistics have ranked highly in the UK breast screening data over many years due to the dedication of a passionate and motivated team who have always strived for very high standards.


We pride ourselves on always being compassionate and patient centred in our care and our excellent patient outcomes are proof of this.

The Screening clinical team includes 3 consultant radiologists, 1 consultant radiographer, 1 associate specialist and 5 advanced practitioners. The wider symptomatic service includes 3 further consultant radiologists and 2 fixed term locum consultants
