Hydro is one of the main suppliers of aluminium extrusions committed to delivering high finish products to the automotive and engineering industries within the UK and European markets.

Due to our on-going expansion, we are currently looking for a Shift Coordinator to join our fast paced manufacturing site in Bedwas, Caerphilly.

Role Purpose:

To oversee the whole of the production activities during shift hours for all general fabrication production areas.

Ensuring all operational activities are conducted within the framework of Health & Safety, Quality, Environmental and HR procedural infrastructure, whilst developing your team operations towards operational excellence, to include the management of KPI's, Continuous Improvement, '5S' and business goals.


Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Identify HSE potential concerns and take appropriate action, deliver toolbox talk cascades where required and risk assessments. To ensure safe working practices are in for all manufacturing activities.
  • Ensure that all processes and all reporting staff comply with the current ISO Quality Standards and Environmental and Health & Safety standards.
  • Lead Quality actions and improvements.
  • Chair daily level 1 meeting to ensure that issues that may impact on the Operational plan are highlighted.
  • Lead weekly team meetings to review progress against any developed Production Action plans and Improvement Schemes.
  • Monitor output constantly to ensure targets are being met and that delivery and customer service requirements are being satisfied.
  • Instigate programs to identify and rectify operational problems that result in scrap being produced and unplanned downtime occurring.
  • Evaluate shift KPI's and establish projects to reduce set up times, reduce/eliminate unplanned downtime, increase the availability of machines, evaluate manning levels and increase output.
  • Ensure strong working relationships between departments for effective decision making and delivery of service.
  • Coach and mentor team members to improve their individual and team performance.
  • Ensure good housekeeping standards and effective daily work routines by embedding 5S management program promoting good housekeeping practices.
  • In conjunction with Human Resources, manage aspects of recruitment, discipline, absence, performance appraisal, skills / competence matrix and setting of goals & objectives for direct reports.
  • Work with relevant colleagues in identifying and rectifying operational problems that result in unplanned downtime / quality concerns and promote continuous improvement.

Skills, Knowledge & Experience:


  • Previous managerial experience within the automotive industry is desirable.
  • Professional knowledge & experience a similar role leading a shift on a rotating shift system, including leading a shift through change and growth.
  • Previous knowledge and experience of working in a lean environment.
  • Has previously demonstrated an ability to create a continuous improvement culture.
  • Good English skills both orally and written.
  • Good level of MS office and IT competence.
  • Organised and structured way of working.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Good work ethic and drive to complete work.
  • Ability to work cross functionally and under pressure.
  • Responsibilities list is not exhaustive.
  • Ability and willingness to travel and full valid driving licence.
  • Driving licence and confidence to travel is desirable.

Salary noted is not inclusive of shift premium, shifts may vary dependent on workload.
