The Horniman Museum and Gardens is a unique attraction in south east London where world cultures and the natural world are brought together for everyone to enjoy.
The Museum holds internationally important collections of anthropology and musical instruments, as well as a popular natural history gallery and Aquarium.
The 16 acres of beautiful Gardens feature a tropical Butterfly House and offer stunning views across London.The Horniman involves over 200 volunteers each year in varied roles across all areas of the museum's work.
We are looking for a Volunteering Coordinator who will be instrumental in managing the Engage and Family Activity teams (the museum's visitor-facing volunteers), and coordinating volunteer recruitment and student placements within museum departments, providing critical administration.
You will be a motivated, flexible individual with a balance of skills in content development and delivery, and administration.As well as being systematic and organised, you'll be able to work appropriately and sensitively with our diverse range of volunteers and visitors, and will be an enthusiastic and knowledgeable advocate of volunteering best practice.

Main purpose of the job
The Volunteering Coordinator helps the Horniman involve around 200 volunteers a year in a variety of roles that connect people with the Horniman's collections, gardens and public programme, with the aim of enhancing wellbeing and creating access to cultural volunteering opportunities.
- To provide critical administration of volunteer recruitment and recordkeeping and deal with enquiries
- To coordinate the development and delivery of Horniman's visitorfacing volunteer programmes, involving the daily supervision of c. 80 Engage and Family Activity volunteers
- To coordinate the annual recruitment for student placements to support those developing careers as museum professionals.
Team description
The Content team comprises experts in our collections of Anthropology, Musical Instruments, and Natural Sciences, and in social practice, schools learning, community engagement and volunteering.
Their collaboration and expertise helps share knowledge, deepen understanding and tell stories emanating from our collections to our visitors in ways that achieve our mission and priorities and raise the profile of the Horniman nationally and internationally.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
Volunteering administration and recruitment (40%)
- Coordinate recruitment for student placements, negotiating with Horniman staff, universities and other placement providers.
- Ensure that volunteering vacancies on the website or any external recruitment platforms are kept uptodate.
- Ensure that volunteering records and databases are kept uptodate, including the consistent capture of data for reporting purposes and compliance with GDPR.
- Support Horniman staff who supervise volunteers to ensure they meet their supervision responsibilities and follow volunteering guidelines, e.g. processing volunteer expenses promptly.
- Process and coordinate volunteer expenses and support the Volunteering Manager in budget management.
- Supervise volunteers hosted in the volunteering team.
Visitor Engagement
Engage Volunteering (25%)
- Develop and deliver Engage volunteer inductions and devise training in conjunction with the Volunteering Manager, involving relevant Horniman staff as appropriate.
- Work collaboratively with the Formal Learning, Community Engagement and Curatorial teams to develop the Engage programme of activities in the galleries and exhibitions in response to Horniman priorities and opportunities (e.g. a new temporary exhibition)
- Coordinate the specialist input of these teams to programme and activity development, and develop and deliver associated resources and training
