Cranleigh STEM is looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join an innovative business in the sustainability and clean energy sector on a full-time, permanent basis.

You will be based at their state-of-the-art facility in Cranleigh, Surrey.


The role of Mechanical Design Engineer will involve working as part of a cross-functional, highly motivated, dynamic, and rapidly growing team of engineers.


The role will include the expectation to work on a wide variety of mechanical and structural products, including 3D modelling of assemblies, sub-assemblies, and 2D drawings to support the next generation of clean energy solutions being developed at the company.


Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver robust design solutions that fulfil the fundamental design requirements.
  • Generate design requirements and identify risk areas.
  • Develop 3D CAD and engineering drawings for assemblies and components, along where required with test rigs and assembly fixtures.
  • Understand and comply with relevant International Standards.
  • Responsible for delivering parts, assemblies, and systems from concept to proof of principle, as part of the design team.
  • Develop engineering expertise on design, manufacturing technology, materials, production methods, prototyping and testing.

Skills and Experience

  • Degree (or equivalent), in a relevant engineering or scientific discipline (ideally 2:1 or better), with an appreciable level of industrial experience in the design and development of mechanical systems.
  • Capable of performing hand calculations to provide initial design direction and confidence in follow up simulation results.
  • High level of knowledge of 3D computer aided design (CAD) software packages (preferably with experience in Solidworks).
  • Working knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
  • Understanding of physical failure methods and approaches to root cause analysis.
  • Good grasp of design verification approaches and ability to define suitable test methods.
