Job description:


It's an exciting time to join the MCA's UK Maritime Services (UKMS) directorate as the Future Fuels Technical Lead supporting delivery of the MCA's Strategic Objectives and three-year Business Plan through the effective leadership and management of ensuring alternatives to carbon fuels are understood and assessed effectively within seafarer curricula.


This is a fantastic opportunity to make positive changes to support the decarbonisation agenda and get really involved in this growing field creating, developing and implementing the training regime in the future fuels arena and feeding into and representing the MCA at International Maritime Organization and other industry working groups and fora.

The Future Fuels Technical Lead is a prominent role in ensuring future technology and the associated training is safe, robust and fit for purpose enabling existing and new seafarers to safely onboard ships operating on future fuels and contributing to government strategy and a greener, more sustainable future.


Responsibilities

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Working with industry while considering Government's drive for decarbonisation and the future international regulations for reducing harmful emissions in shipping. Developing and implementing recommendations to ensure the UK Seafarer Education and Training system is a world leader in future fuel training.
  • Developing the UK's Strategy to modernise the requirements of the STCW Convention and Code regarding training on current and future use of alternative fuels and associated technologies.
  • Leading on the technical aspects of the training requirements for UK Seafarers with regards to the use of future fuels and the carriage of future fuels as cargo. Ensuring the UK Seafarer Educational and Training system reflects these requirements and incorporates the needs of industry.
  • Taking the lead in the technical development of 'Future Fuel Training Courses' and the approval of these courses. Taking the lead on the technical developments for other areas of STCW Safety and Ancillary Technical Training.
  • Representing the Agency at industry and regulatory fora, and technical meetings with other administrations and with operators.

This role can be based at any of the advertised Marine offices.

MCA supports flexible working and operates a hybrid working model between home and office for this role, giving you greater flexibility over where and when you work.

Details of the arrangement will be discussed further with your line manager.


The role will require some planned and unplanned travel to London, eg to support the UK delegation at IMO with some work and travel taking place outside normal working hours and potentially at weekends.


There will be a requirement for travel on official duty within the UK and overseas, which may involve overnight stays away from home.

A passport valid for international travel is required as well as a full driving licence valid for driving in the UK.
