We are seeking two Governance Officers to join our team in London.

The role is open to some hybrid working but the split between office and home will vary depending on the needs of the role.


The Governance Officer role provides comprehensive governance support and secretariat services to Historic England's senior management, committees and panels, including the administration of meetings, events and site visits.

Working closely with the Head of Governance, you will also contribute to and advise on corporate governance projects and liaise with HE's senior leadership team, Commissioners, committee members and a wide range of external stakeholders, including Government departments, developers and their agents.

What you will be doing


Main duties and responsibilities:
Commission and Committee Services

  • With responsibility for specific nominated committees and groups, arrange, attend and record highlevel committee and executive meetings.
  • Ensure business is conducted at meetings in accordance with internal governance arrangements, external codes and statutory duties.
  • Advise on business procedures and act as the first point of contact for staff and members, including the Executive Team and Commissioners.
  • Prepare and coordinate agenda for meetings; prepare accurate and concise minutes, often from complex and detailed information; and draft reports and briefing notes for committee chairs, as required.
  • Coordinate and make all practical arrangements for meetings, member events and committee site visits, and attend such events and visits as required.
Governance Procedures and Practice

  • Ensuring the organisation's governance procedures and practice comply with the highest standards.
  • Coordination of information and updates between Historic England and its committee members, expert external advisors and alumni.
  • Recruitment, induction and ongoing learning and development programmes for Commissioners and committee members.
  • Development and maintenance of corporate governance documents, such as performance monitoring reports, effectiveness reviews, schemes of delegation and terms of reference.
  • Drafting of governancerelated reports for consideration by committees and internal groups.
  • Coordination and oversight of the schedule of corporate governance activities.
