We work 24/7, 365 days a year, to keep our roads safe and reliable for our customers, goods and services.

Our Control Centre in Southwark is the hub of London's road operations. It's where we handle any incidents that could delay trips or disrupt services. We deal with anything - from rain and snow to collisions and roadworks.

It's also where we use real-time data and intelligence about what's happening on the roads to help people cycle, walk, and use buses and roads across the network.

We now have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Business Intelligence Lead.


You will steer a highly technical team to answer, through complex data analysis, key questions to inform tactical operational decisions, specifically for the road network which enables 80% of all trips completed in London.


You will lead a responsive team capable of utilising the very latest cloud technology and software capable of handling large complex data sets and be responsible to help develop new tools and processes to deliver performance metrics and business cases to support TfL programme and scheme delivery.


We are looking for a person who has good problem solving and technical skills, who is able with good people management skills and support form TfL, share them as part of developing the team.

Key Accountabilities

  • Lead a team of Data Scientists and Data Analysts to provide quality analysis and insight to answer strategic and tactical questions for TfL whilst providing strategic direction to the team.
  • Prepare scalable data products to provide insight to multi modal utilisation of London's road space, for a variety of audiences, including Directors and other key stakeholders that can be further integrated into existing business systems.
  • Source, access, manipulate and engineer datasets that typically have one or more characteristics of volume, velocity and variety. Build credible statistical models from the data and use best coding practices to generate reproducible analysis and/or data visuals, drawing on technical and analytical standards from across TfL and industry.
  • Actively promote the development of Business Intelligence infrastructure across both Network Management and Resilience and Investment Delivery Planning to reduce the demand on the analytical resources.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to capture BI and reporting requirements and identify opportunities and solutions, realise efficiencies and reductions in risk, and develop and maintain a network of internal and external contacts including contractors and data suppliers, to promote Operational Analysis across the business.
  • Manage team to enable the presentation of clear and accurate outputs of analysis to both technical and nontechnical audiences, including TfL senior management, providing insightful interpretation by leveraging explanatory commentary, and visual aids to answer the business question.
  • Provision of analysis that will withstand external and public scrutiny such as Freedom of Information (FOI) and other such data requests, and maintain TfL's for openness and transparency in its provision of data and analysis.

  • Ability to deliver strong leadership with proven ability to develop, motivate & manage analytical teams and external resource.

  • Ability to communicate effectively and to build effective working relationships with, and influence, people at all levels across the organisation and externally.
  • Ability to lead, plan and deliver BI solutions, implement, and manage projects to deliver to time, budget and quality, including identifying options, benefits, risks and mitigations.
  • Ability to identify, review, recommend and utilise innovative data science methodologies.
  • Ability to be flexible to audience demands and manage conflicting priorities.
  • Ability to function as part of multidisciplinary teams and to develop and mentor team members.
Knowledge

  • Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) or similar related field or equivalent discipline and significant work experience that includes leading a team of analysts / data scientists. (Essential)
  • Expert knowledge of how to use data to answer business questions that drive insight and decision making and how to communicate the insights to a nontechnical audience. (Essential)
