The Role and Department

The Department is one of the best UK sociology departments with an outstanding reputation for excellence in teaching, research and employability of our students.

Ranked 15th overall in REF 2021 and 4th for Impact, the Department provides a sociological community undertaking cutting edge, socially conscious research in a friendly community of staff and students.

The Role

Working in both Durham County Council's (DCC's) public health team and in the Department of Sociology at Durham University (DU) the post provides an exciting opportunity to make a major contribution to collaborative working between the two organisations and will be supported by a research team comprising academic and policy exchange leads from DU and strategic leads from DCC.

The PDRA will work to enable continued development of research capability within DCC, implementing learning from Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) funding and previous Clinical Research Network (CRN) contingency funding.

These projects have increased the understanding of priorities to facilitate a culture of research in DCC, and to grow collaboration with Durham University (DU).

The advertised position will build on this direction of travel and enhance the research capability in DCC whilst providing the opportunity to lead on 'policy to research' partnerships and for the PDRA to develop their own research outputs and impact in collaboration with the research team.

Durham University (DU) seeks to appoint an exceptional researcher as a Post Doctoral Research Associate (PDRA) with research interests in the broad field of health and wider determinants.

The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) CRN North East and North Cumbria has funded the role of a Post Doctoral Research Associate (PDRA), which has been match funded by DCC for a total of 18 months.

A Memorandum of Understanding has been recently agreed between DU and DCC and the role will both draw on this and provide an early example of development of this relationship.

There will be an element of innovation through the development of the role and the postholder will be supported by the research team, in this respect.

In particular, health and wellbeing and the wider determinants of health are priorities across both organisations and the postholder will have scope to develop the role through strengthening collaborative working and research partnerships between the organisations in these areas.

  • Develop a training offer to DCC staff building on and utilising an existing needs, skills and assets audit.
  • Develop enablers of research activity in DCC through enhancing capacity, capability and collaboration with DU.
  • Strengthen academic links between DCC and DU for example through the successful design and delivery of a workshop series and staff engagement opportunities.
  • Contribute to the identification of funding opportunities and development of funding bid submissions, including internal (DU) impact funding and external funding grants.
  • Evaluate and disseminate learning about the collaboration, including via an academic journal output and local government trade outlets.

Responsibilities:

  • The primary responsibilities of the PDRA in 'Policy to Research' will be to help deliver the five objectives listed above.
In addition, the following responsibilities are consistent with a PDRA role at DU:

  • To understand and convey material of a specialist or highly technical nature to the team or group of people through presentations and discussions that leads to the presentation of research papers in conferences and publications.
  • To prepare and deliver presentations on research outputs/activities to audiences which may include: research sponsors, academic and nonacademic audiences.
  • To publish high quality outputs, including papers
