What's the role?


As Head of Energy Bureau Operations and Finance, reporting to the Director of Bureau & Energy, you will be directly responsible for the management and leadership of our Energy Bureau (Bill Validation, Recoveries and Energy Procurement) teams, alongside our Finance functions.


One of the key responsibilities of the role, supported by a Senior Bureau Manager, Energy Procurement Manager and Finance Manager, is ensuring client satisfaction across all areas of service delivery.

To achieve this, you will drive cross collaboration between the teams as well as across the wider SMS departments, encourage a culture of learning, continuous improvement and providing an excellent customer experience.

Acting as a point of escalation, you will also lead and represent the teams to our external stakeholders.


You will support in designing and implementing initiatives to improve processes and outputs including, overseeing the implementation of new software and reporting tools and supporting the teams with data analytics and reporting.

The role will ensure key departmental objectives, KPIs and SLAs are met, supporting the teams to ensure this occurs.


Working with the Director of Bureau & Energy with the design and implementation of strategies as well as the development of business opportunities with new and existing customers.

Alongside the management of the teams, the role will support in the development and integration of SMS' new commercial EV charge point operating services in relation to the Energy Bureau services.


Work Schedule - Hybrid working Monday to Friday.


Key responsibilities:


  • Responsible for the daytoday oversight of the Energy Bureau and Finance functions
  • Management of multiple teams of office and homebased staff
  • Act as the lead representative to a number of key clients
  • Develop and manage suitably competent teams to support the continued financial and operational services provided to our clients
  • Identify, recruit / onboard the resource as necessary to enable the department to undertake additional management accounting responsibilities for new entities
  • Identify and support initiatives for the technical upskilling of the teams to maximise the effectiveness of our processes whilst ensuring all key controls are adhered to
  • Act as a point of escalation for all members of the teams
  • Provide technical support to the management accountants
  • Monitor the teams' workloads
  • Implement and improve processes and controls across the functions and ensure that these are regularly monitored and adapted where necessary
  • Assist in the development of new financial and operational reporting tools
  • Assessment and reporting against SLAs and KPIs
  • Ensure all processes are documented and up to date
  • Support the teams with analytics and reporting, should this be required to meeting objectives
  • Responsible for developing trusting relationships with the customers/investors
  • Adhere to all relevant SMS processes, policies and procedures
  • Providing dayday administration duties in relation to the role
  • Any other duties as required by the Director of Bureau & Energy

To be considered for this role, we would love you to have:

  • Qualified Accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent)
  • Extensive financial / accounting experience
  • Experience in managing large teams
  • Strong leadership skills with the willingness to be handson
  • Strong situational judgement and risk management skills
