Is excellent attention to detail 'Your Thing'?

We are looking for reliable and hardworking individuals, who'll play a vital role in supporting and leading our Train Cleaning team, to deliver spotlessly clean trains to our customers.

You must be willing to work with our team of Train Cleaners and lead them to success, working outside and onboard our trains throughout the year to ensure we continually deliver hygienic and functioning trains for our customers.

At Northern, we play a vital role connecting millions of people to work, leisure and education opportunities.

We operate 2,500 services a day to more than 500 stations across the North of England. But our vision is about more than just train travel. It's about setting a new standard for customer experiences. And that means building a different kind of workplace. One that values individuality and celebrates differences. Somewhere we can work together, have fun, and get stuck in to making our customers' lives easier.

A place that goes out of its way to create incredible opportunities for everyone to grow and be the best we can be every single day.

So, if you're smart, forward thinking, passionate and full of fresh ideas like we are, you could play your part in making it happen.

About the role:

As a Team Leader, you will play a vital role in supporting and leading your Train Cleaning team to deliver a presentable train and a welcoming environment for all our customers.

Not all of our roles are customer facing, but we pride ourselves on the service we deliver for our customers and colleagues, and we always strive for excellence.

Our trains and stations operate 7 days a week and we complete four different types of cleans within our teams in 24 hours, so it can be more difficult than you may think, but you'll quickly hit that 10,000 step goal.

On our day shifts, cleaning activities include, but are not limited to, removing litter/emptying bins, cleaning tables, and topping up soap and toilet as required.

It could also include dealing with any significant cleaning issues, which otherwise left untreated could cause a train service to be cancelled, such as blood or vomit spills.

If this sounds like your thing, we'd love to hear from you.

Key responsibilities:

This is a varied and challenging role, but here is a taste of what your day-to-day activities could include, but are not limited to:

  • You'll be responsible for the successful running of the shift, from start to finish
  • You'll be expected to brief the team the shifts requirements and organise workloads to ensure our high standards are maintained
  • Ensure all Health and Safety protocol and procedures are always followed
  • Provide continuous support and relay our high standards to the team and any new team members
  • You'll be expected to answer questions/resolve any issues within your team
  • As well as working alongside the cleaning teams to ensure all work is completed in a timely manner

About you:

We are looking for reliable and hardworking individuals to fulfil this role. You'll be willing to work outside, as well as on board our trains, throughout the year. You'll also be flexible enough to deal with ever-changing demands. We teach you everything you need to know so you don't necessarily need any previous cleaning experience.

  • We're also looking for the following
  • Ability to work in a team to get a job completed together
  • Confidence to build relationships with a wide variety of people and teams
  • Leading a team to successfully maintain Northern's high cleaning standards
  • We like you to have pride in your work and pay attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Have excellent initiative and the ability think on your feet in sometimes difficult situations
