Description

CONSULTANT UPPER GASTEROINTESTINAL GENERAL SURGEON POST:

The Department of General Surgery at Croydon University Hospital is a dynamic department looking to consolidate quality and continue to deliver excellence for patients of Croydon.

This post represents a conversion of a locum to a substantive full time role.

The department of general and upper GI surgery is a busy unit and there is increasing pressure on elective and emergency general surgery delivery in Croydon and the wider South London area.

It supports the delivery of the London Emergency Standards and complements the separation of elective and emergency workloads. The General Surgery Department comprises 10 general surgical Consultants with supporting junior medical staff.

Croydon University Hospital NHS Trust provides a broad range of elective and emergency services to a population of 337,000, including General/Laparoscopic Surgery, Breast Surgery, Colorectal, Urological, Orthopaedic, ENT and Dental Surgery, and Gynaecology.

Additionally, the Croydon Elective Centre is an accredited GIRFT hub working with a commitment to excellence.

Croydon Health Services provides integrated NHS services to care for people at home, in schools, and health clinics across the borough as well as at Croydon University Hospital (CUH) and Purley War Memorial Hospital.

CUH provides more than 100 specialist services and is home to the borough's only Emergency Department and 24/7 maternity services, including a labour ward, midwifery-led birth centre and the Crocus home-birthing team.

Purley War Memorial Hospital (PWMH) in the south of the borough offers outpatient care, including diagnostic services, physiotherapy and ophthalmology services run by Moorfields Eye Hospital, alongside an onsite GP surgery.

Our experienced district nursing teams, Allied Health Professionals and community matrons look after people of all ages across Croydon and our Children's Hospital at Home cares for children with long-term conditions without them having to come to hospital.

We are a very close-knit and friendly organization where every one of our 3600 members of staff is valued. We strongly believe that our employees are our greatest asset.

The post holder will be responsible for the day to day management of general and Upper GI surgical patients admitted under her/his care and on call on a 1 in 10 rota for weekdays on the Croydon site.

The post-holder will provide elective general and upper gastrointestinal surgery on an in-patient and day case basis.

It is expected that a large proportion of the workload will be laparoscopic and further development of laparoscopic surgery in the trust is expected for both elective and emergency surgery.

It would be expected that the appointee will undertake a minimum of 8 programmed activities for direct clinical care and 2 for supporting duties.

Normally these are expected to be carried out on site, though this may be negotiable in respect of the supporting activities.

The job plan is annualised and run over a ten week timetable. The table following are some of the specific clinical duties expected of the employee. The department workload and planning often requires a degree of personal flexibility. The final timetable will be agreed between the successful applicant and the Clinical Director following appointment.

Applicants must have FRCS or equivalent and be listed on the Specialist Register of the General Medical Council or be within 6 months of achieving CCT at the time of interview.
