The Centre for Sustainable Energy (CSE) is a Bristol-based national charity that supports people and organisations across the UK to tackle the climate emergency and end the suffering caused by cold homes.

The Role


The Research and Analysis (R&A) Team at CSE is currently looking to recruit a new member of staff to the role of Senior Project Manager (Social Research).

This role is likely to cut across several work areas normally associated with the R&A team includingheat decarbonisation, building retrofit, affordable warmth, fairness in the energy transition, energy policy and local area energy planning.


It will typically involve managing projects of a socio-technical nature with work elements delivered by a supporting team of specialists using methods such as quantitative/qualitative research and analysis, data mapping and modelling, tool development (software),participatory research, stakeholder engagement or policy analysis.

Outlined below are the responsibilities and expectations for the role.


Responsibilities include

  • To manage projects within the Research and Analysis portfolio and all aspects of their delivery, including planning, ethics, budgeting, monitoring and evaluation and in alignment with CSE's Project Management Guidelines.
  • To provide leadership and coordination of the work of others within the context of project management and external partners or subcontractors within the context of project management.
  • To develop relationships with, liaise with, and report to project partners and funders.
  • To maintain effective financial controls of projects.
  • To participate in relevant meetings and processes to enable good internal communications and effective workload planning within the R&A team and across the organisation.
  • Relevant formal research methods training as part of degree course or continuing professional development
  • Demonstrable broad understanding of sustainability and the UK's low carbon transition.
  • Ability to develop fruitful relationships and projects in partnership with other organisations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage a wide range of people in an appropriate manner.
  • Advanced knowledge of a relevant research field, policy area or policy evaluation (Desirable)
