A rare and exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced, well-organised, and committed Medical Secretary to join our friendly team in the Breast Unit at St Albans City Hospital.

This is a full-time post working 37.5 hours per week.

You will work as part of our dedicated team and will need to have experience in audio typing, a previous medical secretary role, excellent communication, organisational and advanced IT skills to provide an efficient secretarial service to a team of consultant surgeons, specialty doctors and registrars


There has never been a more exciting time to join West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust Major redevelopment works are due for completion by 2025 or soon after.

These will be most dramatic at Watford General Hospital where up to 90% of buildings will be new.

The main duty/responsibility of this post is to provide administrative, clerical, and secretarial support to one or more of the Breast Unit Consultants, liaising on a day-to-day basis and prioritising your own workload.

You will have the opportunity to work as part of a team as well focusing on your own tasks and Portfolio.

The duties of this post include but is not limited to:


Typing of clinic letters by using various IT systems as well as discharge summaries and admin letters from tapes or dictation or written copy as required.


To deal sympathetically and confidentially, via telephone enquiries or face to face, with patients, GPs, medical staff, nursing staff and Hospital departments etc, please note that queries can occasionally be distressing or have emotional circumstances.

To arrange for cancellation of Consultant's clinics for annual leave, study leave, etc. via the Trust's Electronic Patient Record system (EPR) (Cerner).

To support with rescheduling of appointments with patients via EPR, telephone or letters.


To assist other secretaries in the Department with workload when required and help provide cover during leave as planned on the units "buddy rota".


Key relationships:

Close liaison with the Breast Service Coordinator (line manager),

Breast Care Unit:

Specialist nurses, Registrar doctors, Speciality Doctors, Consultant surgeons, Medical and Clinical Oncologists, Specialist Registrars, Macmillan Breast Care Nurses and other specialties across different Divisions.


Cancer Services:
You will be required to respond to patient queries and support with validation of patient tracking lists (PTLs)


Admissions Team:
To liaise with the Admissions team regarding patients' admission dates for procedures/theatre lists


Outpatient Team: 2ww booking admin. To liaise with team that book appointments.
