We are currently wanting to recruit an experienced sonographer to join our hard working, friendly and progressive non-obstetric team at Kettering General Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

We provide a comprehensive (non-obstetric) ultrasound service to a wide range of specialties within the hospital and local GP's.

The applicant should be enthusiastic, initiative-taking, well organized sonographer with ability to work autonomously to join our busy unit. You must be highly competent and keen to contribute towards efficient service delivery and excellent patient care.

You will work independently, however support from other sonographers and Radiologists is always available and encouraged.

You must hold a UK recognised Pg. Diploma or Pg. Certificate in Medical Ultrasound or equivalent and state registration with HCPC or other recognised body is essential.

Main duties.


Perform general ultrasound scans including small parts, groins, musculoskeletal - big joints, DVT - lower limb including calf / superficial veins and AAA surveillance studies according to Trust, Departmental and Statutory regulations.


To ensure delivery of the highest standard of care possible for patients by maintaining and monitoring consistently high standards of clinical competence within the Ultrasound team.

To clinically justify ultrasound requests by prioritising in accordance with clinical urgency.

Assist and deal effectively with unpredictable patient demand.

Use equipment effectively and reporting any faults through appropriate channels.

To be conversant with departmental computer systems and ensure that accurate records are maintained.

Provide a high standard of patient care.

Assess and report on own specialist workload.

To communicate effectively to ensure the smooth running of the service.


Take responsibility to ensure that Professional Registration is always up to date and does not lapse or expire and to inform line management immediately with any concerns or if registration lapses or expires.

The trust requires all roles requiring DBS check, to have a satisfactory DBS recheck every three years.


The trust requires require all new starters to subscribe to the DBS update service where it is a requirement of the role.

Be responsible for maintaining own vaccinations/Hepatitis B immunity.

Safeguard patient confidentiality always including adherence to the Data Protection Act.

Attend the Trust statutory refresher courses as necessary.


Be aware of the responsibility of all employees to maintain a safe and healthy environment for patients, visitors, and staff.


Ensure that all duties are carried out to the highest possible standard, and in accordance with current quality initiatives within the area of work and the Trust Equal Opportunities Policy.


Have a commitment to identifying and minimizing risk, report all incidents and report to manager any risks which need to be assessed.

Any other duties commensurate with the grade and in line with the requirement of the post.


This is primarily a clinical role with a degree of first line management appropriate to address service needs and to support 7 days, including bank/public holidays as required by the needs of the service.


To always provide a commitment to the highest quality patient care and to actively participate in programmes to develop excellent standards of patient care.

Provide specialist advice pertaining to ultrasound service.

Responsible for training and supervision of all staff within the ultrasound unit.

Deputise to Lead Sonographer when required.


To be receptive to new ways of working to ensure that the ultrasound department continues to remain resilient and flexible to changing service pressures and needs.

To be conversant with national changes in diagnostics service delivery.

To be open, positive, and flexible in considering implementation of changes which align with national priorities.


To maintain a high standard of clinical governance by taking an active role in audit, peer review and QA programmes.
