About us:

The Great Central Railway is the UK's only double track, main line heritage railway.

It's the only place in the world where full size steam engines can be seen passing each other - just as it was when steam ruled the rails.

Trains run every weekend of the year, bank holidays and selected week days through the summer.

In addition, First Class Dining Car Services operate that provide a number of services from Afternoon Tea to 6 course meals whilst travelling between Loughborough & Leicester.


The railway has won a number of awards including "independent railway of the year", a gold award for the East Midlands best visitor experience and is a quality assured visitor attraction as designated by Enjoy England.

Trains can also be hired for private parties and corporate events. Charter intimate carriagesor be really exclusive and hire the Pullman carriageswith glamorous bar cars.


The Great Central Railways First Class Dining Train is a prestigious, high end dining service which is not only used for Lunch and Evening meals, but for Private Corporate Dinners, Celebrations and Weddings.

It is vital that our service and conduct is really special and memorable for the paying customers.

Job description:


We are looking for passionate, driven and hardworking individuals to join our team to deliver high quality service aboard our First Class Dining Train.

From 2 course Midweek Lunch services to 6 course Evening services, we have a very busy programme throughout the year.


We are looking for those who have great physical strength, stamina and the ability to work under pressure in order to cope with the work load.

You will be in charge of your own Dining Carriage, maintaining high quality, standards and discipline. Assist the Train Manager with delivering a high quality service to all of the guests on board.

You will be expected to take charge and manage the Stewards within your carriage in all aspects of the day to day operation of the Dining Service.

You must be organised, dedicated and have an eye for detail.

This is an excellent opportunity for a Senior Steward, who is looking to work closely with other members of a team and with customers.


Main Purpose of job:


  • To "Re-create the Experience".
  • Take charge of the other Stewards.
  • Delivering service at the highest possible standard.
  • Service preparation.
  • To also take charge as "Train Manager", 1-2 shifts per week.

Key Tasks:


  • Laying of tables.
  • Taking drinks orders and serving of wine.
  • Carrying food and drinks on a moving train, including some aspects of Silver Service.
  • All stock required is on board.
  • Ability to work well within a team and deliver a 'Can do' attitude.
  • Ordering of Beverages, Linen etc.
  • Putting deliveries away neatly.
  • Bar work & Cash handling
  • Maintain a good standard of personal hygiene and hygiene awareness to a minimum level 1 standard.
  • Show flexibility with hours and location dependant on business needs.
  • Turn up on time and in the correct uniform.
  • Demonstrate our company values and adhere to policies.
  • Report issues in a timely manner to your supervisor.
  • Report illness or injury in a timely manner to your supervisor.

Responsible for:


  • Ensure all Dining Carriages (including dumb waiters), Bar area and Staff Room are kept clean.
  • Our customers.
  • All catering Equipment.
  • Stewards within your Dining Carriage
  • Ensuring all allergens are understood and catered for (working with the head chef).

Reporting to:

The Catering Manager.


Special Requirements:

Level 1 Food Hygiene (preferred).

  • Monday-Friday.
  • Weekend availability essential.

Competitive Salary based upon experience.
