The work undertaken by The James Hutton Group is right at the top of the global agenda when it comes to tackling problems such as the impact of climate change and threats to food and water security.


The Communications Teams delivers across the remits of media, marketing, digital, events, public affairs, corporate and internal communications, all designed to support and promote the work of the James Hutton Group.


Critical to successful delivery of this work is ensuring that the Institute presents itself as a dynamic, modern organisation, and a key way of doing this is through engaging with its many audiences through a strategic, creative events programme.


This post is focused on supporting the overall events strategy and plan including planning, delivering and evaluating specific events within the events programme as determined by the Events Manager, which will include support on major agri-events, for existing seminars and lectures and for helping in developing the new portfolio of events which are both in person and online, all of which will be designed to align with the organisation's corporate plan.

Previous experience is essential and can involve either a suitable qualification combined with practical experience or longer-term practical experience.


This post can be based at either Invergowrie, Dundee or Craigiebuckler, Aberdeen and can be combined with hybrid (home) working if desired.

Main purpose of job


The post holder will support the Events Manager in the delivery of an exciting, engaging range of in-person and online events including agricultural events, lectures, seminars, expert panels and outreach activities which is planned for various stakeholder groups including academia, policy makers, industry, the local community, school children and visiting delegations as part of the James Hutton Group's events and engagement programme.

They will also be responsible for some smaller events, with guidance from the Events Manager.


Main duties of postholder

  • Supporting the Events Manager in delivering a portfolio of events and engagement activities that support the organisation's corporate plan, leading on some of the smallerscale activities
  • Facilitating collaboration with staff to help develop and deliver a proactive portfolio of new events and activities
  • Responsible for maintaining detailed events plans and ensuring the events planner is up to date using project planning tools
  • Facilitating visits to the Institute by visiting delegations
  • Working closely with the Marketing, Internal, Digital and Media Teams to promote events and celebrate their success
  • Working with the Marketing Officer to establish building in measurement and evaluation into events and engagement and produce regular report for Executive and the Board.
  • Working towards making all events and engagement activities as accessible as possible using the latest in best practice and tools.

Qualifications/Skills/Knowledge

Essential Qualifications

  • Higher Grade English or equivalent

Essential Skills

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to work with a wide range of stakeholders
  • High standard of written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to organise own work effectively, prioritising competing workloads and working to tight timescales.
  • Good computer/software literacy essential.
  • Good attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Creative, proactive, flexible and able to work to agreed deadlines.

Essential Experience

  • Good organisational skills in order to manage multiple projects to time and quality simultaneously
  • Previous involvement in organising events or activities in a workplace environment

Desirable Experience

  • HND/NVQ/SVQ level 3 or equivalent professional qualification.
  • Experience of events management
  • Experience in using events project planning tools and monitoring tools
  • Use of digital platforms including webinars, eventhosting platforms such as Eventbrite, use of engagement and measurement tools such as Mailchimp and Survey Monkey
  • Experience in a similar environment.
  • Experience in delivering sciencerelated events.

Additional Notes and Requirements

  • This post can be based at either Invergowrie or Craigiebuckler but the postholder will be expected to spend at least one day a week on each site and may on occasion need to travel to other locations as required.
  • Willingness to 'get stuck in' to whatever appropriate task may need doing in the context of Communications activities.
