Job description


Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) has a new unique opportunity for an Environmental Policy Manager who will play a leading role in the development of the environmental policy, guidance, tools and training, which is relied on by the Engineering Functionin DE&S during the procurement and support of the equipment and services we provide to the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force.

You will be part of the Safety & Environmental Protection Team.

This team leads on the generation of policy, advice, learning journeys and guidance regarding safety management, environmental management and the sustainable procurement relating to the equipmentDE&S provided for the Army, the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force.

This role will also be responsible for the line management and mentoring of one member of the Team.

This role is based at Abbey Wood, please be aware that some attendance to site is necessary.


About the role
The responsibilities of these posts will include, but not be limited to, the following:
Environmental Strategy

  • Contribute to the implementation of the DE&S Environmental Strategy goals associated with acquisition.
  • Build and maintain a network for stakeholder engagement to support the continuous improvement of policy, guidance, tools and learning material to drive environmental performance improvement in acquisition.
Policy & Guidance

  • Support the continuous improvement of the DE&S Environmental Management Systems.
  • Proactive manage and evolved the acquisition environmental policy and guidance, within ASEMS, to ensure the content is current, reflects legislation and good practice, is accessible and applicable to Delivery Teams across DE&S.
Environmental Learning Portfolio

  • Ensure the environmental learning resources produce by QSEP SEP align with policy and guidance, are current, reflect good practice, are accessible and applicable to Delivery Teams across DE&S.
Acquisition Environmental and Sustainability Working Group (AESWG)

  • Input to slide pack for the AESWG.
  • Manage associated workstreams and direct the output associated with the workstreams.
Defence Standard 00-51 Environmental Management Requirements for Defence Systems

  • To provide content input for the review and update of the Defence Standard (DefStan , which includes providing SME advice to the Standards Manager. QSEP SEP sponsors DefStan of which is reviewed every five years.

Person specification

  • Member of a relevant Professional Environmental Institute or equivalent body.
  • A minimum of Level 4 (HNC, NQF or above) in a relevant environmental or science discipline.
  • Experience in the use of ASEMS and use of Environmental Management Tools & Processes.
  • Experience in an environmental management role and experience of developing an Environmental Management System.
