To provide legal services to South Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse District Councils and their services, particularly, commercial property related work, development and regeneration, local government law and corporate matters.

To supervise other members of the property team within legal services as required


Service Specific Responsibilities
Handle or work in partnership with external solicitors on major town centre redevelopment
Handle the more complex acquisitions and disposals of land and property
Handle all associated non-contentious work arising out of the councils' property portfolios including leases, licences, deeds, notices, registration of land and compulsory purchase orders
Draft/approve other agreements including grant and loan agreements and service level agreements
Handle affordable housing development work, including funding and nominations agreements
Handle other non-contentious work including byelaws, footpaths and highway matters
Advise on a range of local government law issues
Where appropriate, draft policies and procedures and deliver training to officers and councillors
Advise formal council meetings and councillor/officer groups as necessary
Supervise property lawyer G6 on all property and contract casework where required
Contribute to the development of new systems and initiatives in legal services
Cover the duties of the Property team leader
Undertaking all such duties and responsibilities determined by the head of service


Your essential skills, knowledge and experience
Ability to handle complex property work with limited supervision
Ability to supervise members of a small team of legal staff when required
Ability to work as part of a team
Good oral and written communication and drafting skills
Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines
Keen to be part of a shared service and to contribute to new ways of working and new initiatives
Keen to work to quality standards and to achieve team performance targets
Ability and willingness to attend evening meetings managing staff at venues across South Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse
High standard of written, numeracy and oral communication skills
Ability to work with councillors, colleagues and external organisations to foster good working relationships
Enthusiastic and self motivated
Methodical and well organised
Positive 'can do' attitude, adaptable and ability to use initiative
Displays accountability and responsibility
Results driven and able to meet tight deadlines under pressure

Your desirable skills, knowledge and experience
Able to demonstrate having conduct of complex high value commercial property work
Experience of local authority legal work
Experience of supervising staff
Full driving licence and use of a car for work purposes


Your essential qualifications
Able to demonstrate considerable experience of complex commercial property legal work
Thorough up to date knowledge of property law and practice
Qualified as a solicitor or barrister or admitted as a chartered legal executive or equivalent qualification
Hold a current practising certificate or equivalent
