Job Introduction

"There's no point in being grown up if you can't act childish sometimes." - 4th Doctor

Designing a digital public service used by everyone, every day. _This is OUR BBC. _
Join us and design your future

  • Are you a passionate and empathetic designer with a user centric approach?
  • Do you like to have fun whilst you work? Being able to explore, discover and fail forward.
  • Are you an all rounder UX practitioner with strengths in UX, UI and user research?

The BBC has produced some of the most memorable content and brands (think Doctor Who) that have unified generations of people and contributed to the culture.

Side note, who's excited for the new series?

Whilst we understand the legacy, power and pull of our brands, we know we have some work to do in providing user centred and product led experience.

To learn more about UX&D at the BBC check out our Global Experience Language (GEL) website. We have some great videos featuring the different teams across the BBC.

Main Responsibilities

You'll be leading the UX Research and Design in a new product group (contain your excitement) that sits across a number of our brands' websites, for example Bluey, Doctor Who and BBC Earth.

This is a real opportunity, of course, to make your mark.

In building out our UX practice, we want to create experiences with our brands that are intuitive, engaging, and easy to use, and that give our users a seamless and enjoyable experience.

This is an exciting opportunity for a talented UX Designer to play a key role in shaping the future of these iconic brands and to have a significant impact on the overall user experience of millions of people who visit these websites.

Who we are

Hi We're the BBC UX Team and we're a multi-disciplinary team united by a human-centred approach, we work together to design the BBC's digital experience.

We think this is an amazing opportunity and here's why.

Our ace team of UX designers, architects and researchers collaborate closely with product, editorial and technical teams from across the BBC and BBC Studios.

BBC Studios is a global content company with bold British creativity at its heart. We've been responsible for creating high quality, award-winning content across an extraordinary range of genres and specialisms.

Recent credits, made by BBC Studios Productions and its indie labels, include Happy Valley 3, Extraordinary, Frozen Planet II, Strictly Come Dancing/Dancing with the Stars, Killing Eve, Somewhere Boy, Fight the Power:

How Hip Hop Changed the World, Grenfell: The Untold Story, Prehistoric Planet, Life in Ten Pictures, Hungry For It, Top Gear, The One Show and royal and ceremonial events.

_Together _we create elegant, delightful (not to mention award-winning) digital experiences on a range of different platforms.

We're looking for designers who can bring imagination and curiosity to help bring some of the BBC's strongest brands and shows to audiences that love them.

Day to day, your role is varied and you can expect to:

  • Engage the wider team and key stakeholders in the user-centred design process
  • You take a broader view considering design conceptually and looking end to end, not just downwards.
  • Instigate projects, prioritise your own workload, and plan your work
  • Supporting the development of other more junior UX practitioners
  • Proactively try out ideas, methods and designs with users and with the team to ensure we're solving the right problems, the right way.
  • Support a positive working environment that considers the needs of a diverse team.
  • You care about making great experience for people and are driven to learn and grow to support this.
  • Your portfolio tells your story and informs of how you go about your
design process from ideation/concept to delivery.
Great UI is nice but we're more interested in your design process -
tell us your story:

  • We're looking for someone who can show they have the passion and experience to take the lead on UX design.
  • Your portfolio is full of consistently great work across different screens and experiences be they on mobile, connected TV, tablet, desktop or connected device.
  • Strong skills in user research, interaction design, visual design, creative facilitation and problem definition
  • You're comfortable working both autonomously and collaboratively. You're able to guide your own work and proactively take initiative, as well as find value the feedback and ideas of others in the team.
