Team Lead - Inside IR35

Contract Term: 6 months (possible extension)

Contracting Authority:

Location:
Hybrid Working (two days per week office based - Marsham Street, London)

Job Purpose:


The Ministerial Contact Unit (MCU) is a busy operational unit within Defra's Strategy Directorate, which handles correspondence and parliamentary questions (both written and oral).


This post provides an excellent opportunity to develop a deep understanding of Defra's customers and the issues they care about.

The MCU is a fast-paced team that works closely with ministerial and policy teams on correspondence and parliamentary questions, covering issues across Defra.

We are a flexible and supportive team that offers excellent opportunities for career progression and personal development, as well as developing a detailed knowledge of the Department's work.


As a Team Lead your main responsibilities would be to:

  • Line management and day to day responsibility for a team of EO staff to deliver a credible, responsive and professional service to ministers and the public
  • Manage relationships with policy and ministerial teams
  • Quality assure the team's work and use the results to build capability and promote continuous improvement
  • Allocate cases across the team in a timely and efficient manager, ensuring that caseloads are managed effectively
  • Understand and use performance data to prioritise work to drive overall performance
  • Promote the work of the Department and play an active part in supporting the Civil Service values and culture
  • Set direction, lead, manage and develop an inclusive team, with diversity and inclusion at the heart of team function

You'll have relevant experience in:


  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills
  • Experience of leading and managing performance is desirable
  • Ability to build strong working relationships with colleagues across the department as part of a team or on initiative
  • Strong planning and organisational skills; able to multitask and prioritise competently with the ability to deliver at pace
  • Comfortable working in a fast paced and everchanging environment
  • Be a flexible team player and have the ability to organise yourself and others effectively
