Salary:
£72,500 - £108,700 + car/car allowance + performance-related bonus + a range of benefits to support your finances, wellbeing and family.

Reporting to the Director of Procurement - Distribution, the Head of Procurement & Commercial is responsible for the execution of Procurement and Commercial services within the SHEPD business, SSEN's license are in the north of Scotland.

Demonstrating value leadership, excellent commercial management, customer service and innovation to support the vision of becoming a world class provider of procurement and commercial services and embedding an approach to continuously reduce the total cost of ownership outperforming unit cost targets set.

Our team of more than 3,500 people keep customers connected to a safe and reliable supply of electricity whilst developing the flexible networks that are vital to achieving net zero.

Key areas of activity that the Procurement & Commercial team manage the end to end commercial process within the north of Scotland include subsea cable replacement, cabling to 33kV, overhead lines to 33kV and substations.

In addition we manage all Procurement activities for the business unit interfacing with SSE Group procurement colleagues as required.

  • Support the Director of Procurement
  • Distribution in providing 'best in class' service to internal customers including contracting strategy, supply chain management and commercial management within the Business Unit area. Lead strategic engagement with Heads of Region and Head of Capital Delivery and Project Directors.
  • Embed robust end to end contract commercial processes in the business unit, including estimating, contracting drafting, sourcing, contractual negotiations; contract administration (EWNs, RRMs, CEs), risk management, project and programme cost reporting and ensuring all aspects of delivery follow internal controls as established through the required Capital Projects Governance and Commercial Manuals.
  • Act as role model in promoting SHE across the teams, embedding SHE in the Procurement and Commercial processes and proactively monitoring trends to mitigate issues occurring.
  • Execute strategic commercial and contracting strategies for ED2 which are aligned with category plans, company, and business objectives and ED2 unit costs. This includes identifying and implementing direct and indirect supply chain improvement opportunities to support business growth.
  • All aspects of line management. Coaching the team on all elements of commercial management through structured personal development. The team are responsible for commercial management of multiple capital projects during the project lifecycle from inception to completion.

What do I need?


To be considered for this role, we would love you to have previous experience or an understanding of the financial aspects and implications of capital project delivery and complex programs.

In addition to this we would love for you to have:


  • Expert understanding, knowledge and experience of the processes relating to endtoend procurement and commercial management strategy.
  • Previous experience/understanding of the financial aspects and implications of operational requirements and complex programs.
  • Expert level competence and experience in drafting and negotiating commercial contracts for NEC ECC/TSC/ECSC/PSC or similar forms of construction contracts, with detailed knowledge of relevant statutory and legal provisions.
  • Extensive experience in delivering procurement and commercial services in construction or infrastructure along with expert experience of coaching and developing teams in commercial management.
  • Ideally you will be degree educated or equivalent with direct entry to a recognised appropriate professional body (e.g. RICS or CICES).
