Main duties of the job


This is a clinical role, aimed at ensuring that all of the orthopaedic trays, supplementary instruments and implants for specific cases and surgeons are in the right place, at the right time, in order to avoid late starts and unnecessary delays between cases.

Undertake all tray ordering for the orthopaedic theatres and setting up for the next day where possible.

Liaise closely with colleagues in Theatre Supplies, Sterile Services and MSKN to ensure that theatre delays and patient cancellations due to equipment issues are minimised.


Attend weekly orthopaedic scheduling meetings, escalate any concerns regarding equipment clashes or implant availability to the Team Leader or Deputy.

Work with colleagues in Theatre Supplies and Sterile Services to ensure that all equipment requirements and loan kit requests have been recorded and actioned accordingly.


Development and supervision of the Band 2 Theatre Support Workers in the Elective Orthopaedic Theatres, by developing Support Worker Daily Tasks lists, and ensuring that the Support Workers understand where all equipment and implants are located and how it is maintained or re-ordered.

Nottingham Elective Orthopaedic Services (NEOS) is a specialist clinical unit based at City Hospital.

We undertake the highest volume of Orthopaedic surgery in the region and perform over 1,800 joint replacements a year, including hip, knee shoulder and ankle replacements.

We offer a wide variety of routine and complex Orthopaedic procedures for joint and soft tissue pain. A BEEAM award winning theatre block was opened in 2015 specifically designed for Orthopaedic surgery

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Undertake preparation of instrument trays and chase up the shortfall on the following day so theatre lists are ready to start with the correct instrumentation.

Attend weekly Orthopaedic Scheduling Meetings as the clinical, theatre representative and escalate any concerns regarding equipment clashes or implant availability to the Team Leader or Deputies.

  • Liaise closely with colleagues in Theatre Supplies, Sterile Services and MSKN to ensure that theatre delays and patient cancellations due to equipment issues are minimised.

  • Work with colleagues in Theatre Supplies and Sterile Services to ensure that all equipment requirements and loan kit requests received from Medical Secretaries or via Bluespier have been recorded and actioned accordingly. Escalate any concerns regarding loan kit availability to the Team Leader or Deputies.
  • Set up trays when appropriate for the next day's lists as far as possible. Notate any shortfalls clearly, so that the staff working the next day can commence their list on time, without unnecessary stress and with concise information for briefing purposes.
  • Develop and maintain a good understanding of the Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons' individual requirements and preferences. Develop and maintain complete folders of Surgeons' Preference Sheets in all orthopaedic theatres for staff to access, and save backup copies electronically for retrieval in case the hard copies are misplaced.
  • Assist with reviews of both stock and nonstock items in orthopaedic theatres in conjunction with the Theatres Supplies team and Team Leader, making sure stock levels reflect safe clinical activity.
