The Trauma Service at the John Radcliffe Hospital runs a 'consultant of the week' model of patient care delivery reflecting its major commitment to emergency work.

For each 24 hour period there is a designated on-call team which is Consultant led. Fellows, Specialty Registrars and F2 doctors work shifts in a team structure. Following an x-ray conference and hand over ward round, the night team are off duty the following day.

Two further consultants are committed to running the two daily operating sessions while a fourth consultant will run daily clinics or ward rounds.

Trainees are committed to support these operating lists and clinics. There are specialist clinics for children's fractures, pelvic injuries, polytrauma/rehab and post trauma reconstruction.

The Trauma Unit at the John Radcliffe provides for the total care of the injured from their reception through to discharge.

The hospital is a designated Major Trauma Centre within the Major Trauma Networks.

Approximately 3300 patients are admitted each year to the Trauma wards, under the care of the Trauma Service. Operations are performed on approximately 2700 of these inpatients.

48 inpatient adult beds are available to the Trauma Service, with additional beds in the children's surgical ward and the intensive care unit.

The multiply-injured are managed with co-operation and collaboration from specialists available both within the hospital and within Oxford as a whole.

Patients with multiple injuries are transferred from other hospitals within and outside the region for specialised care.

All Registrars will have a role in the day to day organisation of the Trauma Service. It will be part of their responsibility to ensure that records are maintained and are accurate
