Do you have proven experience of working in either a busy press office, PR agency, or as a journalist, plus a real desire to help tackle the social injustice that is bad housing and homelessness?- Then join Shelter as a
-
Media Officer and you could soon be playing a vital role at the heart of our fast-paced media team.
About Shelter A home is a fundamental human need, as essential as education or healthcare. Yet millions of people across Britain struggle on a daily basis with homelessness, bad housing conditions, soaring rents, discrimination and the threat of eviction. So, we are striving for change, with individuals, in communities, across society, and leading the way to a safe home. We need ambitious, best-in-class individuals who are passionate about our cause to join us at this exciting time. This is your chance to play a part in the fundamental change we are striving to achieve.
  • At Shelter we are united by our purpose to defend the right to a safe home. Our enemy is the social injustice at the core of the escalating housing emergency. We believe that to win that fight, we must be representative of the people we are here to help and those who support our movement for change. In all our people decisions, we take pride in being inclusive, fair, equitable and transparent.
  • We have committed to combat racism both within and outside Shelter and welcome you on our journey to becoming a truly antiracist organisation.
    About the team
  • A key part of Shelter's Communications, Policy and Campaigns division, the media team serves the media needs of the whole organisation. Collaboration and relationship building skills are the name of the game, as we work closely with a broad range of internal stakeholders, as well as external partners, to generate influential coverage across Shelter's campaigns, fundraising, community and services outputs. We help to deliver change by amplifying our hardhitting research, giving a platform to people directly impacted by the housing emergency, profiling our incredible services, capitalising on highprofile supporters and swiftly seizing reactive opportunities. Our aim? To make sure housing and homelessness rides high on the political and public agenda through timely and powerful storytelling. You'll help us do just that.
    About the role
  • If you care about storytelling, are a great team player and want to help end the housing emergency, this is the job for you. As a key member of the media team, you'll be responsible for developing and implementing a whole range of press materials and proactive media campaigns in support of our organisational strategy. You'll also get to actively contribute to the running and success of our busy reactive press office. In addition to working closely with the media team, you'll also need to work in a truly integrated way with colleagues and teams from right across Shelter. And, when you're a selling in a story, as you often will be, you'll need to be as happy picking up the phone to the producer from the Today programme, as you are talking to a local journalist, by tailoring your approach accordingly.
  • We are happy to talk about flexible working, personal growth, and to promote a workplace where you can be yourself and achieve success based only on your merit.
    About you
  • A unique opportunity to join a high performing team with a heritage of groundbreaking campaigns, you'll need writing skills that are second to none, plus a flair for digesting complex content and quickly turning it into pithy soundbites and key messages for your target audience. You'll also need a track record of producing and pitching stories to your editor or the press, plus a knack for building rapport with lots of different people, while your enthusiasm and collaborative approach will help you share your media expertise and collaborate with colleagues to reach our shared goals. A keen eye for risks and opportunities plus strong attention to detail are must haves too, as is a good sense of what makes something newsworthy and an understanding of how to exploit media opportunities to land high impact coverage.
  • Creative and driven to come up with media tactics and ideas that encompass traditional print media, broadcast, digital, photography and video, you're someone who seizes the initiative with new ideas and is always on the lookout for ways to improve ways of working. You're great at managing your own time and projects too. And, given the news agenda rarely waits for anyone, you'll need to be used to thinking on your feet and working to tight deadlines. Finally, while prior knowledge of housing and homelessness is not essential, a passion for social justice is. There's a huge amount we need to achieve together, and you'll need to thrive on the challenge.
Benefits We offer a wide range of benefits, including 30 days of annual leave, enhanced family friendly policies, pension and interest free travel loans. Our employees also hav
