About The Role


This is an exciting opportunity to be part of our Climate Emergency and Environmental Strategy Service as a Sustainability Officer.

In this roles you will primarily provide professional expertise on a broad range of environmental issues including climate change, energy infrastructure and sustainability within the council and across the wider community.

You will work with our service providers and suppliers to establish sustainability policies and action plans such as the Local Area Energy Plan.

Whilst collaborating with local communities, ensuring they have sustainable choices in areas ranging from food and energy to transport.

In short, you'll play a key role in promoting sustainability so we can achieve our aim of becoming a net zero council by 2030 whilst influencing a wider borough emissions reduction.

We are looking for a self-motivated and enthusiastic environmental practitioner who can meet the challenge of enhancing Hounslow's environment. You must have excellent oral and written communication skills and experience of collecting, analysing and monitoring data.

You will demonstrate an understanding of the relevant environmental legislation appropriate to the public sector and the local community and be willing to work as part of a team as well as on your own using your own initiative.


About The Team You'll Be Working In


The Climate Emergency and Environmental Strategy Service is responsible for leading and supporting the delivery of a suite of projects presented in the Climate Emergency Action Plan and other environment related projects and programmes.


The Service shapes the development and implementation of environmental strategies and work according to the requirements of the London Borough of Hounslow for example on air quality, noise, tackling climate change and protecting nature conservation.

Reflecting our values and behaviours, we have established an ambitious change programme that connects our support to the community.

The Service works to ensure change is delivered by working across all departments, with Members, multiple services users, communities, multiple agencies and other stakeholders.

The postholder will report to the Head of Service.


About You

  • Passionate about the environment and developing and embedding sustainable policies and practices within the organisation and working with partners.
  • Comfortable working as part of multi-disciplinary project teams to help break down departmental barriers and ensure the delivery of transformational projects leading to environmental change.
  • Ability to plan and organise workloads efficiently and productively to meet set deadlines.
  • Keen eye to detail and able to monitor and manage data and delivery of plans and strategies and keep senior managers updated on progress.
  • Able to create agile project plans and regularly update sprint trackers for visibility of project progress for senior managers as well as deliver projects successfully on time and to budget.
  • A people person with the ability to communicate key messages effectively with council services and partners.
  • A good level of reasoning, analysing, problem solving and decision-making skills.
