Highway Design


We are seeking enthusiastic and committed individuals to join the Highway Design team and support in the design and implementation of highway and infrastructure projects.


Our current portfolio is extensive and varied and you will have the opportunity to be involved from the inception to completion of projects, taking ownership and shaping the outcomes.

The projects range in scope and value from minor, community-driven schemes in residential areas to large-scale, multimillion-pound interventions in the City's thriving development areas.


Senior Engineers (Salary Grade 4B, £42,503 - £45,495 per annum)

Engineers (Salary Grade 3C, £34,723 - £37,261 per annum)

Assistant Engineers (Salary Grade 3A, £28,371 - £31,099 per annum)

Examples of recently completed projects include:
Trafford Road - £20m installation of LTN 1/20-compliant cycling and walking facilities along the busy A5063 corridor including five CYLOPS junctions


Swinton Greenway - £4m scheme linking Swinton and Monton with 7km of off-road routes and complimentary Highway interventions to promote/enable access.

Highly Commended at the 2023 CIHT North-West awards.


Using your extensive working knowledge of the relevant technical standards, you will produce design packages to an excellent standard using AutoCAD, Civils 3D and associated software.

You will also be competent and experienced in supervising construction activities.


Drainage Engineer (Salary Grade 3C, £34,723 - £37,261 per annum)


As Drainage Engineer you will be involved in the design and supervision of large, multi-disciplinary schemes such as those listed above, but will also have responsibility for standalone drainage schemes.

The design of SuDS in particular is a key part of the role, with Salford leading the way in this area within Greater Manchester.


Another aspect of the role is to provide support to the Flood Risk and Drainage Manager in undertaking the statutory requirements set out in the Land Drainage and Flood and Water Management Acts.


The role will require you to liaise with other professionals across the Technical Services teams as well as clients, stakeholders, statutory bodies, and the public.


Structures

Senior Engineer, Structures (Salary Grade 4B, £42,503 - £45,495 per annum)


We are looking for a skilled Senior Structural Engineer to join our in-house design team which is responsible for Salford's bridge stock; design and inspection of building structures and to support in overall regeneration throughout the City.

As part of the structures team, you will be given the opportunity to:

  • Undertake inspections on highway assets
  • Perform structural assessments of highway assets in accordance with the DMRB
  • Assist in the lifecycle planning and asset management of the bridge stock
  • Design and deliver bridge maintenance schemes
  • Design new bridges and structures within the City
  • Undertake the role of NEC4 Project Manager
  • Act as the Technical Approval Authority for new highway structures in the City
  • Undertake the design of new buildings, or alterations to existing structures, across the authority's building stock
  • Perform housing inspections and undertake condition surveys
  • Complete Building Regulations reviews to confirm compliance with Part A

Examples of recent schemes include:

  • Refurbishment of Lowry Footbridge located at Media City in Salford. The bridge has a 96m span bow string arched structure, with 4No. 31m high steel trussed lifting towers to support the mechanical aspects of the lift bridge. The scheme involved a significant level of structural assessment, specification development, detailed drawings, contract preparation including relevant health and safety information.
