What Is the Opportunity?

Travelers' Medical Technology and Life Sciences cover includes Property, Business Interruption, Employers Liability, Public and Products Liability, Professional Indemnity and Cyber.


Travelers Europe currently offers flexibility to employees who wish to work on a hybrid basis in accordance with our Hybrid Work Arrangements Policy.

This entails full time employees working three days a week in the office and two days at home (or pro rata for part-time employees).

This policy may be changed at the Company's discretion.


We are looking for an Associate Underwriter to join our ambitious and growing Med Tech & Life Sciences team, initially for a 12 month period to cover maternity leave, with potential to extend the position into a permanent full time role.


In this role you will take responsibility for managing and renewing an existing portfolio of Med Tech & Life Science renewals.

You will work with colleagues in Travelers Tech team and build upon your relationships in the market to maximise retention and premium growth.

You will think creatively to find solutions to meet the needs of the client or broker.

This role is eligible for a £3,000/€3,000 new joiner referral bonus.

What Will You Do?- Underwrite and assess risk to maximise retention and profitable growth across a portfolio of existing Med Tech & Life Science cases.


  • Make appropriate decisions within own underwriting authority in addition to considered, intelligent and complete recommendations to technical underwriting/business leadership.
  • Make prompt, sound decisions within underwriting authority and based on appropriate underwriting information.
  • Negotiate terms and conditions consistent with underwriting requirements and service.
  • Understand and execute Travelers' underwriting strategies and principles to produce budgeted results
  • Working with Underwriter on same broker panel, continuously manage book of business, maintaining quality of business, growth and profit.
  • Accountable for accurate underwriting documentation and information in account management systems and adherence to
  • Travelers' documentation standards.
  • Actively engage and seek out training opportunities to further develop underwriting expertise.
  • Develop and leverage broker/client relationships through a high level of visibility and using a disciplined sales management approach (e.g. planning and followup for broker and prospective customer visits/meetings) in support of business objectives.
  • Seek out and maintain collaborative relationships with colleagues in other business units and regions to foster business development across Travelers.
  • Actively participate in regularly scheduled regional and product underwriting and/or sales meetings.
  • Demonstrate superior customer service standards (consistency, quick response, knowledge of products) to meet Travelers' service standards.

  • Typically has proven experience in Underwriting, including identifying and developing new business opportunities.
  • General knowledge of the local insurance marketplace.
  • General knowledge of organisational and regulatory rules, policies, procedures and effectively employs that knowledge in day to day work activities.
  • General knowledge of technical underwriting.
  • Intermediate knowledge and ability required in respect of analytical thinking, judgement, decision making, communication and strong team work.
