Role:
Design Team Leader

Are you an experienced Design Engineer with a strong background in Mechanical, Aeronautical or Automotive Engineering?

Do you have a passion for "Big Engineering", aeroplanes and all things aerospace?

Do you have extensive CAD experience, preferably with CATIA V5?

Do you have knowledge of precision manufacturing, production, machining and inspection techniques?

Then this exciting role is the role for you


You will be working at a world leading aerospace and aerodynamics research establishment which works with such clients as Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Airbus, BAE Systems, Saab and Bombardier to mention but a few.

Research for Concorde was done at this establishment.


As a Design Team Leader, whilst reporting to the Head of Design & Manufacture, you will be the Senior or Lead Designer for assigned projects driving and supporting a highly technical and enthusiastic team to deliver the project on time and within spec.

Your main duties and responsibilities as a Design Team Leader will be:
Responsible and accountable for the co-ordination and utilisation of all the design resources and assets in a multidisciplinary environment.


Responsible for the Design & Manufacture department's quality of design work via a structured Design approval process which includes internal design reviews and drawing approval process.


Manage direct reports by providing regular and timely communication, direct personal contact, clear and unambiguous instructions and ensure that these management 'best practices' are flowed through the Design Office.

Ensure that the design team are fully competent in the use of all relevant software packages.


Ensure the Design team proactively supports project delivery plans and complete design tasks on time, to cost and project specific quality standards.


Ensure drawings or CAD have been peer reviewed and approved prior to release for manufacture in accordance with Design approval process.


Assist the Head of Design & Manufacture in developing operational strategies for continual improvement including design methods, processes, systems, design for manufacture/assembly/test.


Participate in the Design & Manufacture integrated project planning process including time & cost estimating, identifying resource conflicts and providing guidance and support for solutions.


Support regular individual and team reviews with the designers to ensure best practice is shared and manage the appraisal system and objective setting for the designers.

Ensure the Design Office apprenticeship programme is managed and supervision and coaching be given to junior designers.


Maintain the CAD and other design office Hardware and Software inventory and keep abreast of latest updates that are relevant to the company's capabilities.


Ensure all design data is managed, stored and organised consistently across the team and that the company's Design Manual is maintained, made accessible and fully utilised.

Hold relevant and sufficient academic qualifications.

Operational knowledge and experience of CAD - preferably CATIA V5.

Demonstrated leadership experience in a technical project-based environment.

Knowledge of design, manufacturing and production procedures, machines, tools and inspection techniques.

Possess strong leadership credentials.

Have a desire to succeed, see those around them succeed and be driven by continuous improvement.

Have a natural creativity and curiosity for mechanical design.

Be a confident, self-motivated individual committed to ensuring that customer satisfaction is achieved in line with company account strategy.

Be prepared for travel and out-of-hours working from time to time.

Have commercial awareness and client relationship management experience.
