To provide legal advice and guidance to colleagues within the British Council on a diverse range of legal matters, working in partnership with teams across the global network of British Council operations.
Main Accountabilities:
Leadership and management:
- May provide formal line management to Legal Advisor/Counsel or Team Assistant/Paralegal
Relationship and Stakeholder Management
- Key relationships include:
- Client functions (Cultural Engagement, English and Exams, Regions/countries and corporate functions)
- Senior colleagues in procurement, finance, human resources, internal audit and other support/corporate functions
- Contract Management
- Head and Deputy Head of Contract Management
- External legal advisers
- UK and Overseas
- Senior management in client functions
- Support a complex operating environment in an organisation that is both a nondepartmental public body and a charity as well as encompassing a large international commercial operation in English and Exams.
- Support and advise on a diverse range of legal matters, working with colleagues whose first language may not be English and who may have no/limited formal legal knowledge, experience and understanding.
- Work across more than 100 countries with significant regional differences and priorities.
- Support an international organisation undergoing significant digital transformation and investing in technology innovation.
Professional Services expertise
- Provide legal advice, oversight and review for client functions, including review of major bids/ contracts, partnerships and disputes and ad hoc legal advice to ensure legal risks and opportunities are understood to inform the best possible decisions.
- Review all material legal advice obtained by client functions overseas to ensure alignment with British Council values, policies and corporate requirements.
- Lead on the provision of operational legal support to client functions and the legal function overall, for example in the drafting and negotiation of a wide range of contracts, MoUs/Treaties with host country governments, international digital innovation initiatives as well as data, IP, procurement and ecommerce matters and for ancillary legal documentation such as loans, bonds and guarantees, policies, powers of attorney, etc.
- Lead on legal issues arising from setting up new subsidiaries and changes to existing group companies to ensure risks are identified and mitigating actions identified to the business.
- Contribute to the development of the Global Model Contracts Portal working closely with the Contract Management Team, Legal intranet pages and other tools and communications to share best legal practice.
- Where required, deputise for the Head of Legal in their absence.
Consultancy, analysis and problem solving
- As required, advise on the management of legal risk in the organisation, including design and delivery of key change programmes, advising on legal implications of new business models and commercial activities.
- Lead on initiatives to develop legal knowledge and understanding to enhance awareness and capability in legal matters throughout the network.
Role specific knowledge and experience
Sufficient knowledge/experience of:
- commercial transactions
- corporate governance
- legal status (UK and overseas)
- contracts and contract law
- conflict of laws/cross border issues
- intellectual property/digital/privacy plus B2C operations
- international legal issues
- public procurement law and competitive tender processes
- partnerships and joint ventures
Sufficient post-qualification experience.

Contract Type - Fix Term Contract ( 4 Months ) with a possibility of being
permanent
Role Benefits
- Between £56,021 £81,600 yearly gross plus £3,300 London Market Allowance yearly gross
