Description
The Acute Referral Centre (ARC) operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It is the Trusts central point of contact for crisis referrals. All referrals are triaged in the ARC to ensure robust gatekeeping.

This in addition to key functions being undertaken within the centre including the overall management of patient flow to acute beds, links with the Central Place of Safety (PoS) and an imbedded 24-hour Crisis Line.


The Crisis Line works closely with the borough based Home Treatment teams, Assessment Liaison services, Community Treatment teams, acute trusts, A&E's, GP's, NHS 111 and the Police.

The centre provides telephone advice and support for people in crisis whilst co-ordinating admissions and supporting discharges from hospital.

We are based at the Maudsley Hospital, Denmark Hill, London, SE5 8AZ


To provide a telephone based crisis and support service to all who call the Crisis Line whether they be an existing service user, someone who has not previously used services or the carer of someone who has mental health problems.

This includes providing advice to the Police, London Ambulance Service (LAS) and other professionals.


To ensure that all relevant documentation is completed and data relating to all calls received is recorded and collated accurately.


The post will involve liaison with both internal and external stakeholders including wards, community teams, social care, GP's, NHS 111 Crisis Hub, NHS 999 and the Police.

An emphasis is therefore placed on the post-holders ability to communicate in a professional manner at all times.


The post holder is expected to make a valuable contribution to the 24-hour service and is required to work all shifts within the pattern consisting of early shift 08:00-16:00, late shift 14:00-22:00 and/or long shift 08:00-22:00, and night shifts 21:4- 08:15.

We are presently operating with short shifts (times already mentioned) with an option of long days 08:00-22:00 in the day to allow flexible working.


The post holder will work alongside a Crisis Assessment Team (CAT) Practitioner and the Clinical Service Lead (CSL) at the Acute Referral Centre.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Qualified Mental Health Nurse, Occupational Therapist or Social Worker with strong clinical skills and experience to develop their psychological competence in working with varied and complex mental health presentations in a multi-disciplinary team.


The role combines the work of a Band 6 Crisis Line Practitioner with the provision of low intensity crisis-specific psychological interventions.

The post holder will work alongside a Crisis Assessment Team (CAT) Practitioner and the Clinical Service Lead (CSL) at the Acute referral Centre.
