Construction Design Manager required

Duties:


Reporting to the Regional Design Manager, the Design Manager has responsibility for design management within the Building Division of Graham Construction.


Working as an integrated member of project delivery teams and contributing to project bidding, the Design Manager will contribute significantly to the continued success and growth of the Building Division and will be expected to meet personal development targets, project goals and business unit targets.

Excellent technical knowledge, creative thinking and team working are essential components of the job role.


A little more about the role:

CONSULTANT APPOINTMENTS AND MANAGEMENT

  • Prepare and agree scope of services, design responsibilities matrices etc.
  • Ensure that consultants perform and deliver in accordance with their Contractual Obligations.
  • Manage multidisciplinary consultancies throughout the design and delivery process.

DESIGN MANAGEMENT

  • Have a sound understanding of the design process across all disciplines and manage interfaces and sequencing of design.
  • Managing the design process, with a high focus on buildability and efficiency, to ensure the optimum solution is arrived at.
  • Prepare and manage a detailed design and procurement programme considering all of the design interdependencies prevalent on large scale construction projects and linked to construction activities.
  • Monitor and report on the design programme on a regular basis.
  • Prepare, monitor and maintain a detailed Information Release Schedule which is backed by the design, procurement and construction programmes.
  • Chair and minute regular design and technical meetings to ensure the design is developed in accordance with budget, programme and technical constraints.
  • Challenge the design of external consultants to ensure best value.
  • Examine all design information for compliance with commercial constraints, liaise with Commercial team where required.
  • Identify and manage design associated risks.
  • Identify Value Engineering opportunities and innovative alternative methods of construction.
  • Investigate and analyse alternative specifications to ensure compliance and equivalency with Contract Requirements.
  • Manage design change control process.
  • Manage RFI process.
  • Manage flow of design information and give direction to the Project Admin / Document Controller.
  • Prepare and update the Design Workbook on a regular basis

SUBCONTRACTOR DESIGN

  • Have a sound understanding of Contractor Design process and ensure that obligations and interfaces are clear and defined.
  • Assist in the preparation of the design aspect of subcontract tender enquiry packages as required.
  • Develop and manage subcontractor design and approvals programmes to ensure smooth delivery to site.
  • Interrogate subcontractor design drawings and check against other design and as built information to ensure it is fully coordinated, and against specification for compliance.
  • Manage design approval process with subcontractors, consultants and clients in a timely manner.
  • Ensure strict compliance of the design in accordance with Contractual Requirements.

TENDERS & PRECONSTRUCTION

  • Provide support to project bid teams and attend tender interviews as necessary.
  • Carryout design review on tender documents and prepare report on risks / opportunities for Estimating Department.
  • Manage preparation of Contractor Proposals.

GENERAL

  • Input to month progress reports as necessary
  • Coordinate BREEAM and Code for Sustainable Homes requirements.
  • Manage discharge of Statutory Conditions e.g. Building Control, Planning, NHBC, Secure By Design
  • Give direction and manage the Assistant Design Management staff, where relevant.
  • Ensure the quality procedures in respect to his/her duties are implemented.
  • Introduce improvements where appropriate to areas of responsibility.
  • Undertake any other duties which may be required by management.
