Description

The Ophthalmology service is delivered to the population of South Essex from Southend University Hospital, Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford, Orsett Hospital near Basildon and Braintree Community Hospital as well as outreach clinics in the localities.

Similar facilities are available across sites the exception of paediatric operating facilities which are only available at Southend and Broomfield Hospital.

Our Mid Essex service is based at Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford where there is a purpose built Ophthalmology Outpatient Department. Surgery is undertaken in the Day Stay Unit within Broomfield Hospital as well as our dedicated ophthalmology Vanguard Theatre.

The glaucoma service is well established across the service and there is scope for further development both locally and in the community.

We currently perform in excess 300 glaucoma surgical procedures including the most up to date MIGS procedures.

A shared care scheme for stable glaucoma has been established in conjunction with the LOC and CCGs to ease the burden on the outpatient department within South East Essex which will be expanded into Mid Essex during the coming year.

There are also dedicated glaucoma specialist nurses and optometrists trained to provide glaucoma monitoring clinics alongside the medical team.

The Ophthalmology Services within the MSE is under one management structure serving a population of 1.3 million accross multiple sites.

The existing ophthalmology services, led by 16 Consultants, provide a comprehensive range of ophthalmology services including Glaucoma, Cornea, VR, MR, Paediatrics and Oculo-plastics supported by a range of specialist trainees, specialty doctors, fellows and allied health professionals.

The post will be based at Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford but will work across MSE sites.
