Come and join the department that is rated in the top 2% for emergency medicine in the GMC national training survey.

We are looking to welcome up to 15 new colleagues to join an enthusiastic, motivated and supportive Emergency Department team.

You will work in the Emergency Department at Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy, which opened in 2012. The department has an annual attendance of 72000.

The department includes an 8 bay resuscitation area, a 9 bay majors area, a 6 bay minors area and 2 paediatric consulting rooms.

There is a dedicated Procedures room and a 6 bedded Emergency Medicine Observation Unit which admits primarily toxicology and head injury patients.

There is access to electronic pathology and radiology ordering. Departmental guidelines, protocols and rotas are on the departmental intranet web pages. We perform well in key areas such as sepsis, stroke thrombolysis and trauma.

The Emergency Department has 24 hour senior doctor presence, (17 Consultant Emergency physicians) with current shop floor consultant presence daily from 0800 to 2300.

We have 8 GPwSI who deliver regular sessions throughout the week and at weekends. There are daily ENP sessions to help with the minors flow.

There is a co-located GP OOH service in the evenings and at weekends, allowing redirection of appropriate patients. A formal redirection policy is in operation.

There is a 24 hour ENP-led Minor Injuries Unit Located at Queen Margaret Hospital in Dunfermline which is clinically supported by the senior doctors in the Emergency Department.

There is also a new clinical simulation centre available for training at the Queen Margaret hospital.

The post of Junior Clinical Fellow in Emergency Medicine is now well-established in Fife. JCFs support the provision of high-quality patient care within the ED.

The post is held in high regard by NHS Fife, and has proved an excellent springboard for a career in Emergency Medicine in Scotland for many trainees or associated specialties and ACCS programmes.

The post is primarily aimed at junior doctors who have completed Foundation Year 2 and who wish to broaden their clinical experience on the front line of assessment and management of acutely unwell and injured patients.

Each post is advertised for a fixed term of 1 year, with a mutual review after the first 3 months.

We are flexible for those wishing to work less than full time who require a particular work pattern, but there will be a requirement for out-of hours and weekend working.

Over the year, you will work as part of the junior doctor tier within ED.

You will be supported by shop floor teaching by the senior ED team focusing on prioritisation of workload, and formulation of investigation and management plans.

As part of the year you will be able to choose between completing secondments up to 2 months in total or focusing on an area of specialty over the year with 1 specialty secondment completed.

Secondments have traditionally been in anaesthetics and paediatrics for 1 month each but we have been able to accommodate specific requests over the years.

You will have no commitment to ED shifts during this time period including weekends.

Within the anaesthetics secondment you will spend 1 month as a supernumerary trainee (maximum 40 hours per week) gaining skills in basic airway assessment and management.

Paediatric secondments allows familiarity with acute management of sick children and practical procedures such as cannulation and attendance at ward rounds and clinics appropriate to your needs.

Other secondments have been completed within ICU, frailty team, acute medicine, palliative care and surgical subspecialties including orthopaedics, ENT and ophthalmology.

We are keen to ensure the time is focused on your needs in discussion with your educational supervision and have good links with all departments within the hospital to arrange these sessions.

We have developed year long focused programmes as an alternative to the second month of secondments.

Education - Opportunity to focus on development of teaching skills with completion of modules and work with the education department to provide support to medical student teaching and development of simulation programmes.

Research - Opportunity to become an associate PI on an ongoing study within the department and complete GCP training.

Focus on developing research skills and linking within the research unit in NHS Fife and attending relevant courses and study days.

Wellbeing - Opportunity to train as a peer supporter and further develop and evaluate the peer support service in NHS Fife.

Focus on running QI projects on ED staff wellbeing and contribute to ongoing ED projects such as Outdoor rest spaces, PIPP and Restore:
ED and to attend NHS Fife Staff Health & Wellbeing group and develop ongoing policies.
