Description

The Radiation Protection Service aims to ensure the safety of all patients, visitors and staff who come into contact with sealed, unsealed and machine produced sources of ionising radiation & non-ionising radiation.

The service provides a wide range of specialist clinical technical services and safety activities. We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic person to be join our expanding team.

Clinical Technical Services

  • Assist with the implementation of legislation in radiation protection.
  • Assist with periodic testing and annual audit procedures for compliance with relevant legislation, utilising specialist test equipment:
  • assist in testing a range of x-ray equipment.
- assist with wipe testing of sealed radioactive sources when required
- assist in auditing facilities using unsealed radioactive sources, for compliance with current legislation
- assist in testing non-ionising radiation equipment (including UV, ultrasound).

  • Maintain computerised central records of radioactive waste and stocks of unsealed sources
  • Assist with testing and calibration procedures on a range of radiation measuring instruments
  • Assist with calibration of radiation contamination monitors.
  • Assist in providing a radiation monitoring service for staff and patients (including body badges, extremity monitors, TLD, surface contamination etc).
  • Assist with weekly collections of radioactive waste materials
  • Maintain computerised inventories, organise and carry out audits of radioactive materials
  • Assist in the production of Local Rules and Systems of Work.
  • Keep relevant scientific and technical records of work performed.
  • Be responsible for Departmental car. Ensure car is always clean and safe to drive. Arrange repairs and services as necessary.

Managerial

  • Prioritise own workload, manage projects allocated by Service Manager.
  • Keep careful records of all work performed and complete other appropriate records.
  • Participate in a rota to chair and minute Radiation Protection Section meetings.
Teaching, training and research

  • Assist with the administration of training courses provided by the Service.
  • Will be expected undertake further education to develop knowledge and skills in order to progress up Healthcare Science Career Pathway.
Quality

  • Make suggestions for improvements to existing procedures, participate in the development of new procedures and implement changes to new or updated procedures.
  • Ensure all activities are carried out within a quality framework and meet regulatory requirements.
  • Assist with the development and design standard documents, spreadsheets and reports to be used within the Quality System.
Professional

  • Keep abreast of the latest scientific and technical developments. Enrol in appropriate Continuing Professional Development programmes. Attend suitable seminars and courses as part of personal development and to further the work of the Department.
General

  • The post holder has a general duty of care for their own health, safety and wellbeing and that of work colleagues, visitors and patients within the hospital, in addition to any specific risk management or clinical governance accountabilities associated with this post.
