Role Summary


The Head of Retail and Brands will work closely with the Food, Beverage, and Retail team to manage the current retail portfolio, as well as grow this to the next level through new retail and franchise offerings.

The role is aimed at relationship management and network building within the retail sector, and across the wider university.

The Head of Retail and Brands will be wholly responsible for contract negotiation and maintenance, Brand and University standards and ways of working, and the engagement of our tenants, 3 rd party operators, Franchisors, and B2B partners.

The role will carry a sizable existing portfolio, but will be heavily focussed on growing the in house retail offer, alongside building and managing a team to support with the ongoing expansion of the commercial element of the department.


Main Duties

  • Oversee the daytoday operations of all retail outlets, third party partnerships, online shop, Branded outlets, and vending machines. The portfolio is vast, and accounts for 5060% of the departments turnover, with accountability for circa £3m.
  • Engage and build relationships with future branded pipeline of Franchisors and third party operators in order to grow and diversify the offer within the university, the role will involve regular networking and engagement with potential tenants, brands, and national/international companies.
  • Negotiate and manage contracts and commercial terms with thirdparty vendors liaising with legal services and estates to maximise rental income and terms for the university.
  • Manage rental income from oncampus retail spaces, 3rd Party F&B Providers and food kiosks.
  • Set performance goals, budgets, and conduct regular performance evaluations.
  • Manage a team of Retail and Branded staff members, responsible for increasing sales, rental income, and improving service across campus.
  • Oversee vending machine and Micro Mart operations, including managing the relationship with vending suppliers and other key stakeholders, both internal and external.
  • Ensure compliance with university policies, values, operating standards and regulations for both university owned outlets and 3rd party operators
  • Recruit, train and retain a team of retail/branded operations experts, including all aspects on onboarding, performance management, and 121s.
  • Through the team and day to day operations, control costs while maintaining highquality standards.
