The Opportunity


We are currently recruiting for the position of
Shift Operations & Maintenance Assistant (Fuel) for a new build Energy from Waste facility located on the former Drakelow C coal fired power station near
Burton on Trent.

The facility will generate electricity using gasification technology with Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) as the primary fuel. Vital Energi are the owners, EPC, operators, and maintainers of the facility.


The Role:


The Shift Operations & Maintenance Assistant (Fuel) will be employed to support the operation of our new Energy from Waste Plant.


The working hours for this position are 40hrs per week working a 2 week rotating shift pattern of Mornings (06:00am-14:00pm) and Evenings (14:00pm - 22:00pm) - Monday to Friday.


  • Operate mobile plant (including a Sennebogen 830E Material Handler, Front End Loader, and Forklift Trucks)
  • Act as banksman for all deliveries, both fuel and consumables
  • Carry out loading and receipt of materials such as RDF, bulk consumables and ash offtakes, Including the management of ash bulk bag loading systems.
  • Carry out local plant monitoring and carrying out rounds to ensure plant is running safely and effectively
  • Carry out plant walkdowns and inspections redlining P&ID's and Carry out plant identification and tagging
  • Contribute to the creation of operating procedures, risk assessments and method statements for the safe running of the plant, and attend relevant training courses both on and off site

Main duties will include:


  • Contribute to the implementation of the company's safe systems of work.
  • Manage onsite storage of all ash produced by the process including the loading of bulk vehicles.
  • Carry out general maintenance of plant items including mobile plant dependent on individual's competence and plant requirements.
  • Contribute to the effective development of O&M procedures, operating instructions, and RAMS for the facility.
  • This role requires a degree of flexibility to carry out other duties identified from time to time, ensuring site objectives are achieved, especially during construction and commissioning phases requiring work outside of normal duties and hours.
  • Contribute to daily process meetings and team briefs and coach and mentor new and existing staff in the operation of an Energy from Waste facility, Safe systems of Work and procedures.
  • Working with the Maintenance Department, you'll contribute to the coordination and implementation of maintenance activities to ensure plant availability is maximised.
  • You will also build and maintain relationships with colleagues to ensure effective communication across the site, and you will contribute to identifying and taking proactive measures to develop improvements to plant performance, availability, and reliability.
  • Contribute to the control of site incidents and emergencies and reporting of incidents in a timely manner, and proactively search for site defects, raising awareness, reporting, and seeking rectification.
  • Be available for overtime and training courses to facilitate the continued safe operation of the facility.
  • Other duties as directed by the Plant Manager / O&M Manager.

The Person

Skills and Experience

  • Have a background in Mobile Plant Operations, engineering or process operations
  • Hold a Full UK Driving Licence
  • Possess awareness of Health and Safety regulations.
